Greenwich Entertainment is pleased to announce that Philippe Le Gay’s taut psychological French thriller based on a true story, THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT, will open in New York at The Quad Cinema on Friday, January 27 (Holocaust International Remembrance Day) followed by Los Angeles and a national expansion.

A benign real estate deal becomes a sinister standoff between a young Parisian French couple (Jérémie Renier and Academy Award nominee Bérénice Bejo) and a dangerous negationist. Simon Sandberg, a Jewish Parisian architect (Renier) sells his flat’s unused cellar to a seemingly normal and well-mannered former history teacher, Jacques Fonzic (The Untouchables’ François Cluzet). But when Fonzic takes up residence in the cellar, the stranger’s secret life emerges. Slowly and methodically, his far-right, radicalized beliefs about Judaism and conspiracy theories ensnare Simon’s very existence, driving him to more and more desperate strategies to evict the man.

What ensues is a riveting cat-and-mouse game between Fonzic and Sandberg as the increasingly menacing buyer insinuates himself with their naive teenage daughter, turning the family’s idyllic world upside down. Impeccable acting and a nightmare scenario drive this tense and gripping thriller, based on a true story, to its logical and frightening conclusion.

Directed by Philippe Le Guay. Written by Philippe Le Guay, Gilles Taurand, Marc Weitzmann. Cinematography by Guillaume Deffontaines. Music by Bruno Coulais. Produced by Anne-Dominique Toussaint. A Greenwich Entertainment release.

New French dual-language program in Manhattan

Welcome to New York City's new French dual-language program at PS149. The Sojourner Truth School, located in West Harlem (District 3) where 117th Street meets Lennox Avenue, is pioneering a bold new approach to French Dual Language instruction. Launched in September 2022, with students in Pre-Kindergarten, the school is building out a fully immersive Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade Dual Language educational experience - producing students who are fully fluent (reading, writing, and speaking) in both French and English upon graduation. Embracing the most up to date pedagogical practices around dual language instruction, students will enter high school bilingual in every sense of the word - with a full appreciation of not only the French language, but of the culture and uniqueness of the Francophone world and what it means to be a part of this world.

With open enrollment available to all families within the five boroughs - whether French is spoken at home fluently, or there simply exists a desire to become immersed in the language and culture of those who speak French, all are welcome at Sojourner Truth. In the 2023-2024 school year the Dual Language Program will expand to include Kindergarten and First Grade, continuing to grow yearly until we reach our goal of a full Pre-K to Grade 8 French Dual Language Program - the only such one in all of New York City. Principal Flournoy White and her team look forward to families learning more about the powerful work being done here and having them join us as we collaboratively bring the French Dual Language Program to life.

For more information or to visit the school, please contact Jeffrey Perl at JPerl2@schools.nyc.gov

Paris décor de cinéma !

10828874490?profile=RESIZE_710x

Official Selection
Cannes International Film Festival
Rotterdam International Film Festival
Lincoln Center’s Rendez Vous with French Cinema

Kino Lorber is pleased to announce the September 9th theatrical release of Mathieu Amalric's deeply emotional drama HOLD ME TIGHT, a selection of the Cannes International Film Festival, nominated for Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay César Awards. HOLD ME TIGHT will open in New York at Film at Lincoln Center and the Angelika Film Center, followed by Los Angeles on Friday, September 23 at Laemmle Royal, and select top theatrical engagements.

Adapted from a stage play by Claudine Galéa, HOLD ME TIGHT stars Vicky Krieps as Clarisse, a mother coping with great emotional upheaval, and Arieh Worthalter (Girl) as Marc, the husband she leaves behind. Krieps gives a riveting performance as a woman on the run from her family for reasons that aren't immediately clear. Amalric’s sophisticated narrative alternates between scenes of Clarisse's road trip and of Marc as he cares for their two children, Paul, and Lucie, a pianist prodigy. While giving clues along the way, Amalric keeps viewers uncertain as to the reality of what they're seeing until the film’s final moments.
With a dual career as an acclaimed actor (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, My Sex Life…or How I Got into an Argument, Grand Budapest Hotel, Munich) and writer-director (On TourBarbara, The Blue Room), Amalric's sixth directorial outing is his most ambitious to date. His virtuosic, daringly fluid portrait of a woman in crisis is a poignant and unpredictable story about love, absence, grief, and memory.

Born in Luxemburg and educated at Zürich’s University of the Arts, Vicky Krieps came to international attention with her performance opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Her other notable films include Bergman Island by Mia Hansen-Love, Old by M. Night Shyamalan, and the upcoming CorsageThe Three Musketeers and Sexual Healing.

HOLD ME TIGHT’s soundtrack includes piano pieces by Ravel, Debussy, Messiaen, Beethoven, Rameau, Schönberg and Rachmaninov; the film features clips of legendary pianist Martha Argerich performing Ravel, Mozart and Chopin.
“Vicky Krieps in a tour-de-force performance. An impressively shot and performed memory piece.” – Boyd van Hoeij, The Hollywood Reporter

“A gritty, engrossing tale of love and loss. Krieps delivers her strongest performance since 'Phantom Thread'.” – Adam Solomons, Little White Lies

“'Hold Me Tight' achieves something quite remarkable, blurring the line between reality and imaginings to burrow into the heart of grief and loss in ways that are also life-affirming.” – Lee Marshall, Screen Daily

FREN350 -- Translation I, Dr. Gorica Lalic

Conducted in French and English. Asynchronous online.

This course covers methods, techniques, and problems involved in translating from French into English, and English into French. It integrates theory and skill building with content that covers (but is not limited to) the following five disciplines: journalism, politics, literature, economics/business, and movie subtitling. Students will receive individual attention, immediate feedback, and intensive mentoring from their professor, greatly accelerating their development. While the course offers authentic practice opportunities, it also examines vocabulary, comparative sentence structure, grammar, and syntax, and how best to communicate ideas and imagery in both languages. Students will also begin their study of translation theory, exploring concepts such as: translation units; borrowing; calque; literal translation; degrees of freedom; translation loss; cultural issues; compensation; and more.

FREN 521 – Translating, Reading & Culture, Dr. Kathleen Loysen

Conducted in French. Offered in-person with synchronous online option, Tuesdays 5:30-8.

Students will engage in close textual analysis in order to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various translation approaches. They will also develop their cultural sensibilities so as to be attuned to target audiences’ needs, which vary not only according to geography, but also according to education, gender, age, social background, etc. Bringing this cultural awareness into close contact with textual analysis and awareness of genre, students will then develop their proficiency in translating across genres and areas of specialization, paying attention to textual purpose, generic conventions, specialized jargons, etc. Students will be sensitized to how cultural issues influence the task of translation. Students will combine theoretical readings on the issue of the interaction of culture, linguistics, and translation with textual/translation analyses organized around thematic units.

FREN 523: Translation Workshop II: Medical Interpreting in the Community, Prof. Rocio Txabarriaga

Conducted in French and English. Synchronous online, Thursdays 5:30-8:00

This online course offers students the tools to build essential spoken language conversion skills, relevant knowledge of medical subjects, and professional protocol and ethics. It enables students to prepare for work as on-site or remote interpreters in community-based settings that include medical offices, hospitals, and clinics. Students will learn techniques to sharpen their listening skills and enhance their short-term memory, as well as basic interpreting abilities such as shadowing and note-taking. Practice will include the most common delivery modes, such as consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, as well as terminology-building exercises.

I am lucky to teach at one of the most beautiful and supportive independent schools in the New York metropolitan area. My beloved Upper School French colleague was just offered a tenure-track university position and is heading elsewhere – though she is sad to do so. This new opening can include all junior and senior classes (including AP) or all ninth and tenth-grade classes. In either position, the classes would be small, the department amazing, and the course load would not exceed four sections. Personally, I left Columbia University to come here – and I’ve stayed put for 21 years. Please send your cover letter and resume to recruitment@fa.org. Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits are wonderful.
