Antonella Sorace, an Italian living in Scotland, is the founder of Bilingualism Matters, an organization that advances research on bilingualism and language learning. Misconceptions in this area are rampant, and it is thanks to Antonella Sorace's work that we are now able to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that are often found in our schools and in our societies.

When it comes to finding French films or TV shows for kids to watch, the number of programs available on streaming platforms in the US can be overwhelming. That's why, each month, CinéSchool program manager and all-around film expert Nathalie Charles puts together a list of the top French content for kids and teens that is available online. While some films or series are pure entertainment, others are designed to share useful educational concepts, and more still are great for the whole family to enjoy! So, what's on this month?

This Fall, Albertine Cinémathèque partner with the Columbia Maison Française to present free online movies as part of the festival Being in the World: People and the Planet in the French and Francophone Cinema.

En se promenant dans la capitale française, notamment l’été, il n’est pas rare de croiser une équipe detournage ou de découvrir une rue totalement transformée façon Paris sous l’Occupation ou Paris des Lumières. Récemment, les films Notre-Dame brûle de Jean-Jacques Annaud, Les Trois Mousquetaires avec Vincent Cassel ou la série Lupin avec Omar Sy y ont été tournés.
En 2021, la ville a même battu un record de journées de tournages. La Mairie de Paris a comptabilisé 110 longs-métrages et 64 séries, grâce à sa Mission Cinéma, qui octroie les autorisations et récolte les rede-vances. Il peut y avoir un même jour jusqu’à dix ou vingt tournages dans la capitale. Le service veille à déran-ger le moins possible les riverains, les commerces ou la circulation. Les retombées économiques sont réelles. Outre la redevance perçue par la ville, il y a l’emploi de techni-ciens, de figurants, ou la restaura-tion et l’hébergement des équipes. Par exemple, le tournage de Mission : Impossible 6, avec Tom Cruise, en 2017, a généré 35 millions d’euros de dépenses, dont 7 millions en hôtels et restaurants.

Séries en séries
Michel Gomez, délégué général de cette Mission Cinéma, analyse : « Le nombre de jours de tournages a doublé entre 2015 et 2021, passant de 3 500 à 7 000 jours. Cela est en grande partie dû aux séries produites par les plateformes de vidéos en ligne comme Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Netflix ou Disney+. Avec l’appari-tion de ces plateformes, quasi une nouvelle chaque année, la demande en contenus a explosé. »
D’autant qu’une série de plusieurs épisodes implique des tournages beaucoup plus longs que ceux d’un film de cinéma de deux heures. Durant un an, la plateforme amé-ricaine Netflix a, par exemple, tourné la troisième saison de Lupin, inspirée du célèbre gentleman cam-brioleur. Actuellement, Apple TV+ tourne deux séries à Paris, l’une consacrée aux débuts du couturier Christian Dior, l’autre à Benjamin Franklin, de passage dans la ca-pitale en 1776. Deux tournages avec des centaines de figurants en  costumes, de nombreux techniciens et des rues totalement dépouillées de leurs réverbères, panneaux publicitaires ou devantures de magasins du XXIe siècle pour les faire remonter dans le temps.
Sur les quelque 2 300 tournages dénombrés au cours du premier semestre 2022, plus de 2 000 sont des productions françaises, suivies de productions américaines (près de 200). Mais d’autres nationalités sont attirées par le décor parisien : 11 films espagnols, 15 japonais, 8 indiens… qu’il s’agisse de vidéo-clips de musique, de publicités, de courts-métrages ou de séries. Pourquoi la Ville Lumières attire-t-elle autant les projecteurs ? « Il y a plusieurs raisons, détaille Michel Gomez. L’attractivité fiscale, grâce à un mécanisme de crédit d’impôt pour les entreprises françaises comme étrangères, la qualité et la quantité de techniciens de l’audiovisuel pré-sents en région parisienne, et bien sûr l’iconographie parisienne, celle d’une ville romantique avec une im-portante dimension patrimoniale et historique. » Et cela tombe bien car les séries historiques sont de plus en plus nombreuses, comme Paris Police 1900, tourné pour Canal +. Toutes ces images de Paris diffusées sur petits ou grands écrans favo-risent-elles la venue de touristes ? Difficile à dire. Au moins, la ville reste ainsi dans l’imaginaire du plus grand nombre. Mais certaines séries, comme Emily in Paris, ont donné naissance à des visites gui-dées. Elles commencent au Jardin du Luxembourg, dans lequel Assane Diop, joué par Omar Sy, fuit la police en se mêlant à un groupe de livreurs à vélo, et se terminent au musée du Louvre, où il vole le collier de la reine Marie-Antoi-nette. Un passage aussi place de la Contrescarpe, où Emily habite, ou devant la boulangerie qui la fournit en croissants. De nouveaux tou-ristes veulent se promener dans le gigantesque décor qu’est Paris.

Overview: 

PS 84, The Lillian Weber School of the Arts, is looking for a nurturing and caring French-speaking teacher for a dual language program. Students spend 50% of the time learning in an English classroom, and 50% learning in a French classroom. We are seeking somebody for the French component. Candidate must be fluent in French, and a certification in TESOL or Bilingual Education is an asset. We are looking for someone who aims to instill a love and passion for learning in all students. Montclair State University, located 13 miles west of Manhattan, is offering the following translation courses in the fall, several available via synchronous or asynchronous delivery. The fall 2022 semester runs from September 2 to December 20.

FREN350 -- Translation I, Dr. Gorica Lalic

Conducted in French and English. Asynchronous online.

This course covers methods, techniques, and problems involved in translating from French into English, and English into French. It integrates theory and skill building with content that covers (but is not limited to) the following five disciplines: journalism, politics, literature, economics/business, and movie subtitling. Students will receive individual attention, immediate feedback, and intensive mentoring from their professor, greatly accelerating their development. While the course offers authentic practice opportunities, it also examines vocabulary, comparative sentence structure, grammar, and syntax, and how best to communicate ideas and imagery in both languages. Students will also begin their study of translation theory, exploring concepts such as: translation units; borrowing; calque; literal translation; degrees of freedom; translation loss; cultural issues; compensation; and more. 

FREN 521 – Translating, Reading & Culture, Dr. Kathleen Loysen

Conducted in French. Offered in-person with synchronous online option, Tuesdays 5:30-8.

Students will engage in close textual analysis in order to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various translation approaches. They will also develop their cultural sensibilities so as to be attuned to target audiences’ needs, which vary not only according to geography, but also according to education, gender, age, social background, etc. Bringing this cultural awareness into close contact with textual analysis and awareness of genre, students will then develop their proficiency in translating across genres and areas of specialization, paying attention to textual purpose, generic conventions, specialized jargons, etc. Students will be sensitized to how cultural issues influence the task of translation. Students will combine theoretical readings on the issue of the interaction of culture, linguistics, and translation with textual/translation analyses organized around thematic units.

FREN 523: Translation Workshop II: Medical Interpreting in the Community, Prof. Rocio Txabarriaga

Conducted in French and English. Synchronous online, Thursdays 5:30-8:00 

This online course offers students the tools to build essential spoken language conversion skills, relevant knowledge of medical subjects, and professional protocol and ethics. It enables students to prepare for work as on-site or remote interpreters in community-based settings that include medical offices, hospitals, and clinics. Students will learn techniques to sharpen their listening skills and enhance their short-term memory, as well as basic interpreting abilities such as shadowing and note-taking. Practice will include the most common delivery modes, such as consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, as well as terminology-building exercises.
