Women heartsick over sons, husbands, and fathers lost to previous flare-ups unite to distract their men with clever, even comical ruses, from faking a miracle to hiring a troop of Ukrainian strippers.

Selon le dernier rapport de la Modern Language Association, qui fait chaque année l’état des lieux de la place des langues dans l’enseignement supérieur américain, 129 programmes de français ont été supprimés entre 2013 et 2016. Karl Cogard, attaché de coopération éducative à l’ambassade de France à Washington D.C., fait le point sur cette situation inquiétante.

France-Amérique : Toutes langues confondues, 651 programmes universitaires ont été supprimés, précise le rapport de la Modern Language Association. Comment expliquer une telle perte de vitesse des langues étrangères ?

Karl Cogard : Les coupes budgétaires liées à la crise de 2008 ont entraîné de nombreuses fermetures de départements. Les cours de langues, qui sont souvent les moins populaires et donc les moins rentables, ont été les premiers à être supprimés par les universités. Par ailleurs, certains politiciens ont aussi déclaré que l’argent du contribuable n’a pas à financer des programmes universitaires qui ne débouchent pas sur un métier concret. Eastern Kentucky University a ainsi perdu treize millions de dollars de subventions publiques et a dû supprimer neuf programmes, dont celui de français.

When asked to sum up their experiences as students in Lafayette Academy’s French Dual Language Program, one student quote by Khadija stands out -- “In the past three years, the French Dual Language Program has given me huge advantages, and I can say that I will continue to study French as I grow older because of this school. I had so much fun in the past three years. I remember coming into this school a shy, insecure girl; but now I am a confident 8th grader and I will always thank this school because of it.”

On the eve of Lafayette Academy’s 5th French Dual Language Program graduating class, Principal Brian Zager shares, “We couldn’t be more proud of our French Dual Language Program graduates! The Tournées Film Festival, a program of the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, supports French film festivals on college campuses in the U.S.

Tournées Film Festival offers the best of contemporary and classic French films (recently released in the U.S.) with a wide variety of genres.

Professors, departments, student organizations, film clubs, or other university-affiliated institutions are eligible to apply.

Panorama Europe 2019, the eleventh edition of the essential festival of new European cinema, co-presented by Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), includes a wide range of outstanding films by some of the continent’s most exciting emerging directors. The festival, which runs May 3 through 19 with a full slate at MoMI and two encore screenings at Bohemian National Hall, offers New Yorkers an overview of the current European film scene including three French language films highlighted below.

Following his acclaimed debut Keeper (about a teen boy whose soccer dreams are disrupted when his girlfriend gets pregnant), Our Struggles dramatizes the struggles of a factory manager and labor activist whose wife unexpectedly leaves him, forcing him to care for their two children. Romain Duris, one of Europe’s most magnetic actors (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, All The Money in the World), is compelling as a decent but overwhelmed man dealing with the challenges the contemporary world throws him.

Actress Marie Bäumer accomplishes an amazing feat in Emily Atef’s engrossing drama about an extensive interview that Romy Schneider gave while staying at a French spa just a year before her untimely death in 1982. Bäumer captures the unique blend of magnetism, self-awareness, and vulnerability that made Schneider one of the most fascinating European stars of her time. Filmed in lush widescreen black-and-white well-suited for the setting’s gentle, windswept solitude, the film focuses on the increasingly close but wary friendship that emerges between Schneider and the journalist, while also following Schneider’s interactions with a close friend who arrives to keep her company. Further complicating the retreat is the photographer, who is an old flame of Schneider—who is haunted throughout by the recent suicide of her ex-husband, and an estrangement from her teenage son. Bäumer’s Schneider is bracingly honest, funny, and emotionally open.

A jazzy noir that is set against the political turmoil of the early 1960s, Alan Cavalier’s film is stunningly photographed by the great Pierre Lhomme (best known for such films as Jean-Pierre Melville’s Army of Shadows and Jean Eustache’s The Mother and the Whore).

Nassim, a 30-year-old French-Moroccan man, returns from Abu Dhabi to his hometown in Southern France, with his American fiancée. But the trip offers little comfort; the failing city is now governed by the far right, the Moroccan community is isolated, and Nassim is virtually estranged from his father. Relationships and family bonds are tested. With a sure touch, Hamich draws us into a deeply absorbing series of confrontations and realizations, telling a universal story that is very much rooted in today’s political climate.

The 2019 Albertine Prize, one of the only literary awards in the United States whose winner is selected by the reading public rather than a judging panel, today unveiled its nominee list of five works of fiction in French, translated into English and published in the U.S. over the past year. As of today, U.S. readers nationwide can vote for their favorite book. The $10,000 prize is co-presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Van Cleef & Arpels.

Showcasing the extraordinary  diversity and creativity of contemporary French writing, the five nominated books map a literary journey that spans three continents and encompasses the outbreak of a civil war and the Rwandan genocide (Small Country, Gaël Faye); the epic journey of a family over three generations between Teheran and Paris and eastern and western cultures (Disoriental, Négar Djavadi); the creation and destruction of a family in a southwestern village in France (Waiting for Tomorrow, Nathacha Appanah), the ambivalent and tragic relationship between a family and a nanny (The Perfect Nanny, Leila Slimani), a narrative analysis of WWII outbreak and Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria (The Order of the Day, Éric Vuillard).

The author will receive $8,000 and the translator will receive $2,000.

173 écoles, 94 villes, 34 États ! Il s'agit des dernières données sur les filières bilingues francophones aux États-Unis. Les écoles qui ont répondu à l'enquête sont majoritairement des écoles publiques au niveau élémentaire. Quelques établissements secondaires proposent un enseignement bilingue en français, leur nombre devrait cependant augmenter dans les prochaines années tant la demande est forte pour un continuum de qualité au collège et au lycée. C'est le cas en Utah, en Louisiane, en Floride et à New York. Toutes les écoles sondées suivent le programme de la ville ou de l'État dans lesquelles elles se trouvent. Celui-ci est enseigné en anglais et en français selon des modèles d'enseignement qui peuvent varier d'un district scolaire à l'autre.

Alors que les écoles publiques du comté de Montgomery (Montgomery County Public Schools) comptent la plus ancienne filière d'immersion en français des Etats-Unis, ouverte en 1974, c'est la Louisiane qui, par ses liens historiques avec la langue française, est à la tête de l'éducation bilingue francophone aux États-Unis, notamment grâce au soutien du Conseil pour le développement du français en Louisiane, le CODOFIL. Cet État comptait 405 élèves inscrits dans une filière d'immersion en français en 1991, 5 279 élèves sont aujourd'hui inscrits dans 34 écoles en 2018-19. Deuxième sur la liste, grâce à un mode de développement spécifique, les filières bilingues de l'Utah servent 5 000 élèves dans 31 écoles différentes en 2018-2019. Avec sa "Révolution bilingue", la ville de New York propose le plus grand nombre de filières bilingues en français, à l'échelle d'une ville, avec 12 écoles servant 2 000 élèves.

La croissance de ces programmes reflète également leur popularité parmi les familles non-francophones dont les enfants représentent la majorité des élèves inscrits dans ces filières. Beaucoup d'autres manifestent régulièrement de l'intérêt pour ces filières à en juger par les longues listes d'attente et les systèmes de sélection par loterie mis en place dans les écoles.

De plus, selon l’enquête de recensement American Community Survey, 1,3 million d’Américains de plus de 5 ans parlent français à la maison. On estime que 250 000 enfants en âge d'être scolarisé vivent dans des foyers où le français est utilisé quotidiennement. Cependant, moins de 10% d'entre eux bénéficient d'un accès à un enseignement bilingue français-anglais. On peut donc espérer voir grandir ce nombre d'écoles afin qu'elles puissent servir un plus grand nombre d'élèves.

Une solution pour y parvenir est celle que je propose dans mon livre, La Révolution bilingue : l'avenir de l'éducation s'écrit en deux langues. en impliquant les parents dans la création de nouvelles filières, en leur faisant comprendre les avantages du bilinguisme pour qu'ils ne renoncent pas et continuent à maintenir leur langue à la maison, en les aidant à s’organiser pour qu'ils puissent convaincre les directeurs d'écoles et trouver des solutions localement, et en leur faisant prendre conscience de l'immense pouvoir qu'ils ont sur leur école. Avec cette démarche qui part des parents, il sera possible de multiplier le nombre de filières bilingues aux Etats-Unis et dans bien d'autres pays.

Désormais consultant spécialisé dans le tourisme en Louisiane, Joseph Dunn a précédemment occupé le poste de Directeur exécutif du Conseil pour le développement du français en Louisiane (CODOFIL), et travaillé, entre autres, au Consulat général de France à La Nouvelle-Orléans, à l’Office du Lieutenant-Gouverneur de Louisiane, et à l’Office du Développement Culturel de Louisiane.

Location: Brooklyn and Manhattan

Dates: July 1 through August 30, 2019 + several training sessions in June

Job description:

Make a positive impact on the lives of children this summer!   This is a fun and rewarding job for any individual who enjoys being around children and helping guide their social development.  Counselors work with small groups of children ages 3.5 to 11. Counselors lead and assist groups at fun athletic and creative arts activities throughout the day, including swimming.   Strong communication skills, energy, patience and stamina are all critical for success in this highly rewarding position.  Experience working with children in a group setting is a plus. College students and graduate students preferred!  Camp runs Mon thru Fri from 8:00am to 6:00pm. 

Our Philosophy :

• The camp environment is relaxed, stimulating, fun and nurturing; our staff must have that perspective and vision.
• All staff must be dedicated to making every day a memorable experience for campers. Being able to have fun oneself is greatly encouraged, as it enhances the young campers’ experience.
• Our staff must be comfortable with on-going peer collaboration.
• All camp activities are conducted in French and our priority is to find Counselors comfortable with French . The use of English is kept to a minimum.
• Activities for campers include water games, swimming, arts & crafts, field trips, sports, drama and group games.
• Each week is built around a different theme; staff is expected to plan all activities around that theme. Our staff is not employed in the role of babysitter for campers. Staff must actively participate in the planning and performing of all activities. Creativity is certainly welcome!!!!

Requirements :

• Applicants must be fluent in French and at least 17 years old as of July 1, 2019.
• Must have previous, positive experience working with children, ages 3 -11.
• Candidates should be personable, energetic (must participate in all camp physical activities), responsible, team-oriented and creative.
• Candidates must have a skill in one or more of the following areas: dance, sports, theater, singing
• Must be willing to work the shared Extended Hours Program, 8:00 - 6:00 PM
• Strong swimmers a plus

Training

All counselors must attend training sessions/orientation (5 days) conducted in May & June and additional training during camp on weekends.
