  • EDITH PIAF AT 100: A celebration of her Centennial

  • Jun 9, 2015 at 4:00pm to Jul 13, 2015 at 5:30pm
  • Location: Drom NYC & the Metropolitan Room
  • Description:

Come to our new cabaret show telling Piaf’s story through song, circus and burlesque!

On JUNE 9TH at 8pm (doors at 7pm) and JULY 13TH at 9.30pm (doors at 9pm), I will happily guide you through the decadent world of Edith Piaf using her timeless songs to retell the life of this iconic performer who’ve inspired me so much in becoming an artist. Accompanied by a traditional musette band and multi-disciplinary backup singers, I will recreate the brothels, circuses and nightclubs that created the great Piaf we all know. The performance will last 60-70 minutes.

2015 marks Edith Piaf’s centennial. ‘La Môme Piaf’, as she was nicknamed, introduced America to the world of ‘Chanson Réaliste’. However, her early life is shrouded in mystery – daughter of a circus performer, childhood in a brothel, blind for years and ‘miraculously’ cured by a pilgrimage St. Therese – these stories and more are brought to life with music, dance

Working in what she calls “the tradition of lyrical abstraction,” the artist animates her compositions by enhancing the depth and light of each color she uses, making her images glow from within. She also combines painting techniques and textures to strong effect, mixing liquid fields of color and drips of paint with sharply etched lines and rough, energetic brush strokes. These elements come together in works that balance freedom and openness with a tightly organized sense of formal balance.

Over the course of her career, the artist has gone from making black and white drawings to oil on canvas paintings, to finding a unique style in her current work, done in oils and resin on plexiglass. Sometimes painting on both sides of the clear plexiglass surface, she gives her images a complex, multi-layered presence, making
