  • L'atelier Francophone: Cours de théâtre en français

  • Apr 25, 2011 at 2:00pm to Jun 1, 2011 at 6:00pm
  • Location: Pearl Studios
  • Description:

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) invites you to join us for the fourth edition of our annual World Nomads Festival, which this year showcases the arts and culture of Morocco. The month-long, multi-disciplinary Festival, celebrating 21st-century transculturalism through the arts while advancing critical thinking and dialogue among cultures, will be held in May 2011.

Morocco is recognized worldwide for its distinctive and layered cultural identity. The country’s unique geographical location has made it a crossroad for ancient trade routes, and continues to contribute to its importance as a migratory highway for ideas and peoples. Today’s Morocco shines as a hub of traditional and modern creative expression, where ancient cultural practices thrive, kept alive by a full spectrum of master artisans, performing artists, and more, while innovations are woven into vibrant contemporary artistic forms. To many people across the world, Morocco is known as the site of rich scenic locations and beautiful film sets. Building on the stellar accomplishments of veteran directors of past decades before them, a new generation of filmmakers has emerged in the past ten years as a fresh, raw and bold cinematic voice, engaged with the complexities of present-day Morocco. This series highlights contemporary issues that pervade artistic production in Morocco: the legacy of the years of political repression, undocumented workers' migration to Europe, Casablanca as an urban metropolis, and Morocco's increasing commitment to cultural diversity.

Highlights of the World Nomads Morocco CinémaTuesdays series include Faouzi Bensaidi’s A Thousand Months, winner of two awards at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival; the remarkable 1935 short film View of the Main Square and the Small Square from director Gabriel Veyre, who trained with the Lumièr

FIAF will exhibit the work of three leading women contemporary artists in a new gallery show, Senses and Essence, as part of FIAF’s World Nomads Morocco Festival this May. The site-specific exhibition will feature specially-commissioned pieces by Amina Agueznay, Safaa Erruas, and Najia Mehadji, curated by Nawal Slaoui.

Amina Agueznay will present a woven piece created in collaboration with twenty-three women needle workers; Safaa Erruas will create one of her distinctive installations, echoing Agueznay’s work; and Najia Mehadji will draw inspiration from the movements of the Sufi whirling dervishes to create black and white prints. Through their work, these artists will reflect on ideas of existence, the origin of life, sustainability, and gender, creating a starting point for conversation about women in modern Morocco.

Mice at Play and Belathée Photography are once again teaming up to bring game dames to an unreal afternoon of glamour, role-play, and fun! This time around we have chosen the visually stunning, politically conservative, rock-n-roll era of the late 1950s-early 1960s. Think Mad Men, Jackie O., A Simple Man and Holly Golightly!

Designed to help us reconnect with our youthful pastime of dress-up, this playdate will have us dare to “work the camera” while we put on a playful late 50s persona. Let’s don our best liquid mascara, enjoy canapés and vintage cocktails, and dance to Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley sides as Annabel and Dorothée take candid photos. People will be saying, “Cast an eyeball on those Dollies.”

So come escape squaresville! Leave the ankle-biters and back seat bingo partners at home, Baby. Let’s get chrome-plated with a high nest. It’ll be a kick, we promise.

From a previous Mice at Play dress-up photo shoot: “Every moment and every detail of it was magically surreal, delici
