  • Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917

  • Aug 10, 2010 at 5:00am to Oct 11, 2010 at 3:00pm
  • Location: MoMA
  • Description: In the time between Henri Matisse's (1869–1954) return from Morocco in 1913 and his departure for Nice in 1917, the artist produced some of the most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic works of his career—paintings that are abstracted and rigorously purged of descriptive detail, geometric and sharply composed, and dominated by shades of black and gray. • Location: Brooklyn, NY
  • Description: Alexandre Guillaume's acrylic paintings offer a more masculine take on abstraction. In his work, Guillaume incorporates the speed, brutality and impatience we experience in daily life to create paintings that ultimately leave the viewer in peace. A thick, carefully placed, large brush stroke interrupts a solid ground to end in light, airy splashes of thin lines, alleviating an omnipresent tension. His palette ranges from a monochromatic grey, to a swath of black paint on a bright orange, yellow, blue or red ground. His work will be on view at the gallery from August 6th through September 12th.
