  • Aug 10, 2010 at 5:00am to Oct 11, 2010 at 3:00pm
  • Location: MoMA
  • Description: In the time between Henri Matisse's (1869–1954) return from Morocco in 1913 and his departure for Nice in 1917, the artist produced some of the most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic works of his career—paintings that are abstracted and rigorously purged of descriptive detail, geometric and sharply composed, and dominated by shades of black and gray. Works from this period have typically been treated as unrelated to one another, as an aberration within the artist's development, or as a response to Cubism or World War I. Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917 moves beyond the surface of these paintings to examine their physical production and the essential context of Matisse's studio practice. Through this shift of focus, the exhibition reveals deep connections among these works and demonstrates their critical role in the artist's development at this time. Matisse himself acknowledged near the end of his life the significance of this period when he identified two works—Bathers by a

  • Location: Brooklyn, NY
  • Description: Alexandre Guillaume's acrylic paintings offer a more masculine take on abstraction. In his work, Guillaume incorporates the speed, brutality and impatience we experience in daily life to create paintings that ultimately leave the viewer in peace. A thick, carefully placed, large brush stroke interrupts a solid ground to end in light, airy splashes of thin lines, alleviating an omnipresent tension. His palette ranges from a monochromatic grey, to a swath of black paint on a bright orange, yellow, blue or red ground. His work will be on view at the gallery from August 6th through September 12th. • Marianne Dissard - Concerts à NYC cet été

  • Aug 24, 2010 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Location: Joe's Pub
  • Description: Based in Tucson, Arizona, Marianne Dissard composes chansons with a strongly American flavor. Her last album, L’Entredeux, was cowritten and produced by a fellow Tucsonian, Joey Burns (of Calexico fame) and has earned raves on both sides of the Atlantic. She is also a filmmaker and a performance artist whose work has been presented throughout Europe. Her French lyrics have a timeless edge, and the sometimes cinematic arrangements evoke Western ballads, polka, and the music of Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg, while always retaining a strong personal identity.
