Known for her evocative and experimental free-flowing style, Marguerite Duras revolutionized the form of the twentieth century novel, and her innovations also carried to the screen and stage. At the initiative of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, and in partnership with Anthology Film Archives, the Baryshnikov Arts Center and the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF).

  • Read-In/Speak-Out On Haiti

  • Description: On Friday, March 5, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the East Gallery of the Maison Française (Buell Hall) , we will hold an open mike for members of the Columbia University and area community to speak out about the earthquake and recovery, or to read a poem or passage from a work of Haitian literature or a work on Haitian history or culture.   • Description: Parisian stage director Irina Brook presents a work featuring a diverse ensemble of female performers including Nicole Ansari, Winsome Brown, Joan Juliet Buck, and Sadie Jemmett. Inspired by La Vie Matérielle, Marguerite Duras’s collection of essays on daily life, and Virgina Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, this evening promises to be more of a festive gathering of talents than a classic reading; an experience of sharing these authors’ extraordinary words while cooking, laughing, crying, singing, and dancing together in an imaginary and theatrical kitchen.Brook, daughter of director Peter Brook and actress Natasha Parry, has directed theater and opera productions throughout Europe. Her Paris-based theater company, Compagnie Irina Brook, is currently on tour with four different productions.
