Music Box Films is proud to announce the theatrical release of WALLANDER: THE REVENGE on Friday, June 1st in New York (Cinema Village) and Los Angeles.  Directed by French/Swedish director Charlotte Brandstrom, THE REVENGE is the first episode of the original Swedish WALLANDER series.   Music Box Films will release 13 WALLANDER films on VOD iTunes, Amazon and Vudu on May 25 and DVD on May 29.

Before Stieg Larsson  (Millennium Trilogy) and Jo Nesbø  (Headhunters, Harry Hole novels) there was Henning Mankell. Based on an original story from immensely popular Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, WALLANDER: THE REVENGE follows the titular chief inspector Kurt Wallander (Krister Henriksson) as he investigates crimes and solves mysteries in the deceptively dark underbelly of picturesque modern Sweden.

The global sensation was also adapted into a BBC series starring Kenneth Branagh as the eponymous police inspector and has won numerous BAFTA TV Awards including Best Actor for Mr. Branagh.

WALLANDER: THE REVENGE begins with Kurt Wallander having achieved his life’s dream– buying a house by the sea. Suddenly, a heavy explosion ruptures the peace and quiet in Ystad when the town’s single transformer station is blown up, and more explosive deeds follow. The military is called and the little town starts to look like a war zone. Are the explosions acts of sabotage or terrorism? Everything is chaos and Wallander fumbles in darkness as he tries to chase down the culprits.  Acclaimed Swedish actress Lena Endre ( Erika Berger in the Millennium film trilogy) stars as Katarina Ahlsell, a divorced district attorney who has recently moved next door to Kurt Wallander.

One of Sweden’s most celebrated artists and perhaps its greatest living crime writer, Mankell’s Wallander character is responsible for the author’s mainstream popularity around the world and has sold over 20 million books worldwide.  With over 40 stage plays, dozens of novels and many adaptations for screen and television, Mankell’s latest project surrounds the life and work of his late father-in-law, the legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.
