This presentation considers the value, persistence and changing character of Jewish humor in France by examining two popular visual texts: The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob (1973) and The Rabbi's Cat (2011). Through them we see changing definitions of what it means to be both Jewish and Arab in France in the last quarter of the twentieth century and the new millennium.
Vanessa R. Schwartz is Professor of History, Art History and Film at USC. An historian on modern visual culture, she was trained in Modern European History with a concentration on France and urban culture. The author of Modern France: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2011), It’s So French! Hollywood, Paris and the Making of Cosmopolitan Film Culture (Chicago, 2007) and Spectacular Realities: Early Mass Culture in fin-de-siècle Paris (California, 1998), she is now working on the history of “the jet age.”
