Talk by Andy Martin
Long before emails and Prism, there was already surveillance and data gathering. J. Edgar Hoover and the forces of the FBI were particularly watchful of the activities of subversive French philosophers, such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. L'Étranger and L'Être et le néant aroused fear and trembling. Andy Martin is a University Lecturer in the Department of French at the University of Cambridge. His latest book is The Boxer and the Goalkeeper: Sartre vs. Camus (Simon and Schuster), and he is a contributor to the Opinionator column in the New York Times.
The introduction to Andy Martin's talk will include stories, photographs and audio-visual recordings relating to the visits of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus to the Maison Française in 1945 and 1946 on their first trips to the U.S., unearthed during research for the Maison Française Centennial Exhibition.
