L’Arbre, le maire et la médiathèque
Eric Rohmer, 1993. Color. 105 min. DCP.
With Pascal Greggory, Arielle Dombasle, Fabrice Luchini
In French with English subtitles.

Opinions about mayor Julien’s plan to build a cultural and sports center at the edge of town have spiraled into the absurd. His novelist girlfriend thinks it’s too ambitious; environmentalist schoolteacher Rossignol can’t bear to see a picturesque field destroyed. Even his daughter weighs in.

Rohmer, a master of creating character through dialogue, turns the conversation to politics in a farcical comedy about the futility of local government.

“[This] low-key comedy… [is] a great political film.”—Libération
