Ici On Parle Francais (We Speak French Here): Foreigner composers "speaking" French, Frenchmen "speaking" Italian

A three-program, six-concert music series presented with the Four Nations Ensemble.

These concerts, programs of Baroque masterpieces, contextualize great music with the participation of professors from the Columbia University faculty as well as curators and historians from other walks who will take part in round table discussions on Sunday afternoons before the matinee performances. Monday evenings’ shorter events will include a pre-concert talk by Four Nations director Andrew Appel.

Attendance is limited and tickets are $50 per concert ($25 for students), or $125 for the three-concert series. For more program details and to purchase tickets, visit www.fournations.org

Sundays at 2:30 p.m. with pre-concert roundtable discussion
Mondays at 8 p.m. with pre-concert talk

Concert 2: Purcell and the Theater
Sunday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m.
Monday, March 23 at 8 p.m.

Henry Purcell, the composer for the Restoration stage in England, knew the music of the Parisian theater and composed overtures, dances and curtain tunes that evoke the simplicity and elegance of his French counterparts but every moment is enriched by Purcell’s love of English polyphony making every hornpipe or minuet a study in musical brilliance and contrapuntal savvy.
