Service suspended - The men behind the New York tram renovation

Every year, two million people climb into cable cars suspended above the East River to visit Roosevelt Island. But from March through December 2010, the cable cars linking Manhattan and Roosevelt Island ceased to run. The job of renovating the New York icon fell to the French company Pomagalski, leader in urban cable transport. Behind this immense project nestled in between skyscrapers were the men who made it all possible.Two photographers, Carol Caver and Jonas Cuénin, painstakingly documented the activities of the American, French, Swiss and Canadian team throughout the entire renovation. One photographer witnessed the project from the exterior while the other observed the interior scenes, capturing fleeting moments of New York history from all angles. With their own interpretation, the photographers pay homage to the story of these workers.Carol Caver is self-taught photographer who has discovered her life-long passion. A photo-journalist, Jonas Cuénin is a correspondent living in the United States.-De mars à décembre 2010, le téléphérique new-yorkais qui relie Roosevelt Island à Manhattan a cessé de traverser l’East River pour transporter les deux millions de visiteurs qui l’empruntent chaque année. Poma- galski, société française et leader mondial du transport urbain par câble, a été chargé de rénover cette icône de la mégapole. Derrière la réalisation de cet impressionnant chantier encastré entre les gratte-ciel se cachent pourtant des hommes.Deux photographes, Carol Caver et Jonas Cuénin, ont été chaque semaine les témoins privilégiés de l’activité de ces Américains, Français, Suisses ou Canadiens. L’un les a observés de l’extérieur et l’autre a vécu les travaux de l’intérieur, captant certains moments volés qui font de chaque construction de ce type une aventure exceptionnelle. Ils rendent aujourd’hui hommage, avec leur propre regard, à l’histoire de ces ouvriers.Carol Caver est autodidacte et a fait de la photographie une passion durant toute sa vie. Jonas Cuénin est photographe de presse et travaille comme correspondant aux Etats-Unis.
