NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of two innovative and talented French artists Claude Morlot and Michael Alberon in Mélange of Milieu. The opening reception will be on Thursday, February 16 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

Lecture by Lise Schreier

Lise Schreier est professeure associée à Fordham University (New York), rédactrice adjointe de Nineteenth-Century French Studies et lauréate d’une bourse de recherche du National Endowment for the Humanities (2016-2017). Elle s’intéresse à l’histoire des représentations et à la place qu’occupent les questions coloniales et raciales dans l’imaginaire populaire français du dix-neuvième siècle. Elle est auteur de Gens de couleur dans trois vaudevilles du XIXe siècle (L’Harmattan, 2017).

En 1847, le théâtre des Variétés engage trois comédiens de couleur pour interpréter les personnages d’esclaves d’un nouveau vaudeville, Malheureux comme un nègre. La stupéfaction est générale : jamais en France aucun acteur noir ne s’est produit sur scène. La confusion est d’autant plus grande que se débat au même moment l’abolition de l’esclavage. Pioneering filmmaker Agnès Varda has spent more than 50 years making radical films and art installations at the intersection of fiction, documentary, and autobiography. This March, join us at CinéSalon for a special tribute to her perpetually influential and inventive work.

On February 28, in lieu of CinéSalon, Agnès Varda will be at FIAF for a special talk about her recent turn toward visual artist in advance of her first-ever exhibition in NYC. View Details

The rest of March will be dedicated to some rarely-screened works from her œuvre. The series will conclude with Jacques Demy’s—her late husband—debut film Lola, featuring an original song by Varda.

Please note, there will be no regular CinéSalon screenings on February 28 due to the special talk.
