Gilles Legrand's YOU WILL BE MY SON, is a taut psychological intergenerational drama about the troubled relationship between Paul de Marseul, the owner of a prestigious Bordeaux vineyard, played by great French actor Niels Arestrup (A Prophet, War Horse,) and his son. YOU WILL BE MY SON was shot on location in the region of Saint Emilion at the Chateau Clos Fourtet.

A demanding and passionate winemaker, Paul is also a domineering and manipulative father, not happy that his son, who works for him on the family estate, may one day succeed him.  Paul dreams of a more talented and charismatic heir, more in line with his own fantasies. Things deteriorate as the health of Paul’s trusted estate manager (Patrick Chesnais) takes a turn for the worse after his own brilliant son, Philip (Nicolas Bridet), a winemaker as well, returns from California. Not before long, Paul starts seeing Philip as his ideal son and turns away from his own flesh and blood.

This exhibition celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the Columbia Maison Française, founded in 1913 and the first French academic and cultural center on an American campus.  It presents a wonderful collection of unpublished photographs, documents, program materials, and AV archives. These are woven into a narrative celebrating the rich history of the Maison Française and the role it has played in exposing Americans to notable French thinkers and artists, disseminating French and Francophone culture and ideas in the U.S.,  and nurturing strong ties between Columbia University, France, and the Francophone world.

The ethereal, enchanting images of Vanida Amiot are displayed in a mesmerizing solo exhibition at Agora Gallery this September. Although she is firmly abstract in her art, eschewing representational images, Amiot also takes care to engage the imagination of her audience, often giving works titles that reference something as specific as it is conceptual. This, combined with her skillful, delicate touch when it comes to composition, color and brushstrokes, means that every work seems to speak directly to the viewer with a message of importance and interest. Subtle yet assertive, this is artwork that exudes a sense of presence as impossible to ignore as it is to deny. The exhibition will begin on September 10, 2013 and run until October 1, 2013, with an opening reception on the evening of Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 6-8PM. Entrance is free and anyone seeking some inspiration to start the fall season is encouraged to attend.

Vanida Amiot’s ethereal abstract paintings tur

In these dire times, where the world that is heir to Al-Ma'ari is in cinders,  we seek respite in his philosophical stance of coming to grips with being from nothingness, and the dark night that has befallen the people of the Arab world.

This salon promises to be an enlightening evening of poetry and discussion with Iraqi-born Mohamed Alwan, who received his PhD in Arabic literature from the University of Indiana and taught at Georgetown, Harvard, and Tufts. The Alwan Ensemble accompanies this evening of poetics, delivering a transporting feast of well-loved songs, evoking the ambiances of Cairo, Baghdad, al-Quds and Aleppo, built around mesmerizing textures of rhythmic and improvisational intensity.
