Diary of a Chambermaid1946. USA. Directed by Jean Renoir. Screenplay by Burgess Meredith, based on the novel by Octave Mirbeau. With Paulette Goddard, Burgess Meredith. In the second of his American films with a French setting, the expatriate Renoir relied heavily on the paintings of his father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, to achieve some of the lyricism of his A Day in the Country (1936). The younger Renoir also returns to satirizing the French bourgeoisie, as he did in his masterful The Rules of the Game (1939). 87 min.
