Two voices from Francophonie ! Marie-Jo Thério and Gino Sitson

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 7pm

Adults: $35
LFNY Students: FREE
Running time: 75 minutes

Two Francophone artists, Gino Sitson from Cameroon and Acadian-born Marie-Jo Thério from Montreal will unite their talent to celebrate the month of La Francophonie in a unique concert at the Lycée Français in New York.  Each artist will perform (about 45 minutes each), then will unite their melodies for a final and colorful moment.
Alone on stage,  Marie-Jo Thério will perform songs in French from her own repertoire, accompanying herself on the piano and a new instrument, Ondomo, invented by Naoyuki Omo (from Asaden), a small instrument with keys and 4 octaves visible. After a few minutes of intermission,  Gino Sitson (voice, body percussion & compositions) will be playing with his band: Jody Redhage on cello & voice,  Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin on viola, Mike McGinnis on clarinet & voice. An exciting and energetic combination of new sounds, where percussive grooves and enchanting vocals are intertwined with lyrical melodies.

About Gino Sitson
Award-winning, New York-based vocal virtuoso Gino Sitson is a French-American originally from the Bamileke region of Cameroon, Central Africa. His daring musical project combines in a most innovative way jazz, gospel, blues and traditional African polyphonies, poly rhythms and melodies. Through his seamless four- octave range, Sitson travels from a soulful, resonantly masculine tenor with woodwind-like overtones to a high-soaring, nearly genderless spiritual wail, a feat that recalls Brazil’s Milton Nascimento, another deep-rooted yet restlessly protean, jazz-inflected shape-changer. He has laid down tracks or shared the stage with Manu Dibango, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou NDour, La Compagnie Créole, among others. Gino Sitson has just been appointed as UNICEF CAMEROON Goodwill Ambassador.

“An extraordinarily pliable voice in settings rich with melody, emotion and rhythm…always fascinating.”
Don Heckman - Los Angeles Times

About Marie-Jo Thério:

Acadian-born singer-songwriter Marie-Jo Thério led an original career, punctuated by the creation of five albums. A multi-faceted artist, she has performed at the theater, in musicals, in movies, and has performed all over the world. Her musical show “We all have a Lydia Lee”, inspired by the double album “Chasing Lydie (2011)” was presented recently at the Théâtre de Quat’Sous (Montreal) with a cast of 15 actors-musicians-singers. Marie-Jo lives between Montreal, Moncton and a small village in Costa Rica.

«With a musical vision as clear as a rushing river, as sweeping as desert vista, she transports the listener.. »
