Catherine Deneuve has reigned over the world of cinema for over forty years. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival in 1964; from then on, the die was cast. From Jacques Demy to André Téchiné, François Truffaut to Lars von Trier, Luis Buñuel to Arnaud Desplechin and Robert Aldrich to Tony Scott, her powerful personality has left its mark on the history of cinema; she has provoked meetings and made creation happen. Our goal is not to retrace step by step a career that has flowed like a stream for over forty years, but to paint a close, personal portrait of a lady. During several long interviews that structure the film, we asked her about her love of life, her insatiable curiosity, her vibrant sensuality. A successful career is not built on beauty and talent alone. Deneuve’s greatest weapon is her intelligence, the strength of vision that she casts on the world. To evoke her past and recent work, we invited Catherine Deneuve to talk with directors Arnaud Desplechin and Régis Wargnier, Academy Award winner with Indochine in 1993, with whom she goes back to the film location in Switzerland. We also filmed Catherine Deneuve at work with French singer Etienne Daho, recording together a duet of his song « L’adorer ». To retrace Catherine Deneuve’s past, we have selected archives and excerpts from a dozen major films.
