  • Location: PS 110 - The Monitor School
  • Description:
    Hello Parents,
Just wanted to send out a reminder about the next tour of PS 110 which will be on Monday, February 6th at 9:15 am.
Here are some highlights: experienced and supportive
administration, dedicated and well-trained teachers, arts residencies for every
grade, frequent field trips, parent involvement welcome, recess outside on a
beautiful playground, new library, relationship with gardner at McGolrick park
and after-school options. The emphasis is truly on "growing hearts and minds"
    and not on test-prep.
This year launched the first French dual language class in Kindergarten. The
tour will address questions about this program as well as the school in general.
No need to register for the tour. The school is located at 124 Monitor St (on
the corner on Monitor and Driggs). You can usually find parking on Monitor
between Driggs and Engert on Monday mornings.
Visit http://www.ps110k.com/ for more information or feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about the school.  If yo

  • Shoah

  • Dec 23, 2010 to Dec 24, 2010
  • Location: IFC Center
  • Description: Lanzmann’s monumental examination of the Holocaust grew out of a concern that the genocide perpetrated only 40 years earlier was already retreating into the mists of time, that atrocity was becoming sanitized as History. His massive achievement—at once epic and intimate, immediate and definitive—is a triumph of form and content that revealed hidden truths while rewriting the rules of documentary filmmaking. Now a quarter-century old, SHOAH remains nothing less than essential.

  • A Tribute to GEORGE BRASSENS with PIERRE DE GAILLANDE’S Bad Reputation and Special Guests

  • Dec 17, 2010 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm
  • Location: http://barbesrecords.com/brassens.html
  • Description: For the past couple of years, Pierre also rediscovered his dad’s record collection has taken on the impossible task of translating Brassens’ songs, to pretty astonishing results. Sticking to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs Pierre has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and charango. The results sound nothing like a translated work. De Gaillande has managed the impossible - to translate not only the style, content and wit of the original, but also the musicality of the original recordings while using completely different arrangements. The best way to describe the project would be to compare it to the perfect movie adaptation of a book classic. Think Stanley Kubrick or Raoul Ruiz.

  • Dec 13, 2010 from 3:15pm to 6:00pm
  • Location: http://www.filmforum.org/
  • Description:

A ballerina with Roland Petit’s Ballet des Champs-Élysées, Leslie Caron was not yet 20 when cast by Gene Kelly as his gamine-like leading lady in An American in Paris. And suddenly this convent-educated Parisienne was a major Hollywood star, partnering Fred Astaire in Daddy Long Legs, melting hearts as the waifish Lili (her first Oscar nomination), and starring in the decade’s most lavish movie musical, Gigi. But this was only the first part of a seven-decade stage, screen and television career that saw her graduate to more adult parts with her Oscar-nominated role as a pregnant single girl in The L-Shaped Room; romanced on screen by Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Rock Hudson, David Niven, Maurice Chevalier, and Warren Beatty; directed by Vincente Minnelli, Raoul Walsh, Louis Malle, Abel Gance, François Truffaut, and, on stage, Jean Renoir; and win a 2007 Emmy for playing a rape victim on Law and Order: SVU. • Night Moves: Claude Chabrol & Arthur Penn

  • Dec 3, 2010 at 1:00pm to Dec 9, 2010 at 2:00pm
  • Location: http://www.filmlinc.com/
  • Description: “I’m known mainly for making movies about people shooting and cutting each other up,” remarked Arthur Penn of his own body of work, though he might just as soon have been speaking about the films of his French contemporary, Claude Chabrol. The most prolific member of the Nouvelle Vague, Chabrol averaged a movie per year from his debut in 1958 through his final film in 2009, specializing in delicious Hitchcockian thrillers and scathing indictments of bourgeois decadence. Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, Penn was emerging as the American filmmaker most directly influenced by the New Wave, with the existential paranoia of Mickey One and the form-shattering jolt of Bonnie and Clyde (a movie famously passed on by both Godard and Truffaut). On the occasion of their recent passing, we salute these giants of cinema—and longtime friends of the Film Society—with a combined retrospective.
