LA FETE DE LA MUSIQUE / MAKE MUSIC NY: “The largest music event ever to grace Gotham”.
Make Music New York began as La Fête de la musique in Paris in the 80’s. The free outdoor music fest has met with such success that it now takes place in countless cities worldwide during the summer solstice. This year, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Bureauexport the French Music Export Office have teamed up for a unique program of concerts, parties, and screenings.
On June 21st, a free concert by French-American electro pop trio LIPTEASE at the French Embassy (wine and cheese bien sûr!) will preceed a Tribute to Serge Gainsbourg in Central Park. The tribute will feature French musicians Ben L'Oncle Soul with his French-infused Motown sounds, including a few Gainsbourg covers followed by Catherine Ringer (of the group Les Rita Mitsouko), mythic French pop star and contemporary to Gainsbourg. Finally, the documentary Gainsbourg and his Girls, (Pascal Forneri, 2010) an enlightening look at one of France's most provocative and cherished figures seen through the eyes of his many muses, will be projected in the park.
LIPTEASE (doors open 5:30 pm, concert 6pm) at the Cultural Services/French Embassy: 972 5th avenue, New York
Featured artists at Summerstage:
CATHERINE RINGER (BECAUSE)
It is impossible to mention Catherine Ringer without evoking the creative French pop/rock duo, Les Rita Mitsouko which she was a part of with Fred Chichin. A unique artist on the French music scene due to her legendary stage presence and colorful, over-the-top artistic image, Ringer has charmed audiences for nearly thirty years. Her solo debut, entitled “Ring ‘n Roll,” still has the energy to grip audiences with her mesmerizing voice.
BEN L’ONCLE SOUL (MOTOWN FRANCE)
Ben L’Oncle Soul grew up to the beat of Motown. Scouted by Motown France, his considerable talent led him to open for big names in contemporary soul, such as Musiq Soulchild, Raphael Saadiq and India Arie who invited him on stage to perform. On his album, brass instruments and melodies of Motown dance effortlessly without missing a beat, while his flamboyant interpretations introduces audiences to the mix of soul music and French language

Throughout his life, French singer-songwriter, actor and director Serge Gainsbourg composed for some of the most beguiling songstresses including Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin and Vanessa Paradis. His lyrical brilliance has left an extraordinary musical legacy that spans numerous musical genres. Twenty years after his death, director Pascal Forneri presents “Gainsbourg and His Girls,” an enlightening documentary on one of France’s most provocative and cherished figures, seen through the eyes of his many muses.
