The following internships are available from September, 2010 onwards:


COLLEGE INTERN WANTED: ARTS PUBLICITY -- Jonathan Slaff & Associates (www.jsnyc.com)does media relations for cultural institutions, professional theaterand dance companies and civic events in New York City.  The firmsolicits print and broadcast media outlets for news/feature storycoverage, arts reviews and photo placement. It is one of the few pressoffices in New York that takes its own press photos. Artists representedhave received 19 Obies, three Bessies, Lucille Lortel, Theater World,and Outer Critics Circle Awards.  Interns will work with up to twelveprofessional theater groups at a high management level.  Recommended forstudents on arts management or arts journalism career path. In both cases, our work is heavily arts-related, so any candidate shouldhave some kind of professional experience or ambition toward the arts,particularly performing arts.

I cannot say which educational level is best suited to our training. Theprerequisite is passion for the arts.  We do not have any particularacademic preparation requirement, but good written and spoken English isimportant, since most of our work is language-based.

All training is at:  55 Perry Street, Ste. #1M, New York, NY 10014.

Here is an example of a training plan.  You will see it is designed for a26-week internship.  Please note: Since our work is interdisciplinary,the phases of training are combined in many cases.

PHASE 1:
The Trainee will gain a general understanding of the company, itsmission and goals, business practices and tiquette, as well as itsservices and products. The Trainee will receive an orientation into thelandscape of arts n New York, including its major institutions andfunders, and the government agencies (City, State and Federal) involvedin funding the arts. The nature and process of arts news will beexamined in depth, as well as the journalistic and ethical issuesinvolved in determining what is artistically newsworthy. The economicimpact of the arts on neighborhoods and the city at large will beexplained, in context of Jonathan Slaff's research as Chairman ofDowntownNYC. Finally, artistic issues of drama and dance criticism willbe examined in depth. (Weeks 1 to 3)

PHASE 2:
The Trainee will gain knowledge and practical experience in web softwaredevelopment tools and web design to learn how to effectively edit andmaintain "NY Theatre Wire" and "Curator's Choice," two of the websitesof Metro New Media, Inc. (Weeks 2 to 4)

PHASE 3:
The Trainee will gain skills and experience with press releases of artsevents and will have the chance to improve skills in the relevant tasksassociated with that including interviews, writing, etc. (Weeks 3 to 26)

PHASE 4:
The Trainee will gain an understanding of the various steps involved inan email marketing strategy/campaign and also gain practical experiencein assisting in the execution of it through the use of Infacta GroupMail.

PHASE 5:
Trainee will acquire skills in theatrical and dance photography andapply them to campaigns for clients of  Jonathan Slaff & Associates.(Weeks 3 to 26)

PHASE SIX:
Trainee will acquire skills in TV production and apply them to JoeFranklin TV, Alien Comic TV, and other video productions of Metro NewMedia, Inc. (Weeks 3 to 26)

NOTE:
Two computer stations are dedicated for intern's office work. Allsoftware, media directories, and a reference library, including manualsof all kinds, will be at intern's disposal. A photo and video kit arededicated to intern's photography and videography. An IT technician andtutor will be on call for Intern's assistance.
