  • Wynton Marsalis Quintet & Richard Galliano: From Billie Holiday to Edith Piaf [Live in Marciac]

Jazz CD Release date: June 22

In the southwest of France in August 2008, American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and French accordionist Richard Galliano teamed up on a musical tribute to Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf at the Jazz in Marciac festival. The challenge was to translate the music of two legendary singers into instrumental versions without the benefit of voices or lyrics.

    arton3505-f62af.jpg

Marsalis and Galliano surmounted that challenge with nine artful arrangements that are striking in their rhythmic variety. From the dizzying waltz tempo of “La Foule” to the infectious swing of “Them There Eyes” to the haunting performance of “Strange Fruit,” the magic of this concert has been faithfully captured in sound, as well as in video through a special bonus DVD and is a must-have item for serious jazz collectors and casual listeners alike.

The Deluxe edition CD/DVD capturing all of the stunning detail of this incredible live performance with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and Richard Galliano at the Jazz in Marciac festival (Summer 2008) will be released in the U.S. on June 22 (Rampart Street, LLC / Jazz in Marciac).

    Musicians:
    Wynton Marsalis, Trumpet
    Richard Galliano, Accordion
    Walter Blanding, Saxophone
    Dan Nimmer, Piano
    Carlos Henriquez, Bass
    Ali Jackson, Drums

Wynton Marsalis is a multiple GRAMMY award-winning artist and composer who has sold more than 7 million records (including 3 Gold Records) throughout his career. He has been described as a creative genius, compassionate humanitarian, legendary trumpeter, masterful composer, arts advocate, tireless educator, and cultural leader. He also serves as Artistic Director of the venerable Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Richard Galliano is a renowned French-born accordionist who has collaborated with musicians including Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, and Wynton Marsalis. Hailed as an extremely versatile musician who is able to masterfully navigate many musical contexts and genres, Galliano is also the recipient of the prestigious Academie du Jazz Django Reinhardt Prize awarded annually to the best French musician.

  • Currently listening to a fantastic compilation CD, Springtime in Paris (BRISA Entertainment). This disc is filled with vintage songs and features an array of French and American singers. The collection includes master of the les chansons Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf, George Brassens, Yves Montand, Jacques Brel and Americans Eartha Kit, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Louis Armstrong. There are so many great songs it is a bit difficult to choose a few favorites but here are some titles I really enjoy - C'est si bon/Eartha Kitt (what a kick), Padam...Padam/Piaf, Rue LePic/Montand, Moi, J'aime le Music-Hall/Trenet, La vie en Rose/Louis Armstrong. Although the latter is sung in English this classic jazz version of La vie en rose is very moving. So is April in Paris by Doris Day. I love listening to this CD it makes me smille everytime. Check it out!
