Survey : A New French Bookshop in New York City

3438642541?profile=originalThe Cultural Services of the French Embassy is currently working on a project to open a new French bookstore to be located on the Upper East Side of New York City.

The goal of this new French bookstore would be to offer a vast range of French books and works in English translation, both in paper and digital format, at low prices and available for purchase at the store and online.

In order to best identify your potential requests and wishes at this new space, we would be grateful if you would take a quick survey. This is accessible by clicking the below link.

Five names will be selected at random from the surveys completed and these participants will receive a copy of one of the latest award-winning French books.

  • @ Patricia Jaffe, there is a French bibliotheque in Manhattan -- at FIAF, albeit private and one must purchase a membership to use its library and resources. But the annual membership is affordable and worth it (in addition to the library use, there are other great benefits to the membership). Plus the library just recently added ebooks.

  • It's nice but I wish we could have a French "bibliotheque"in Manhattan where you can get a membership and borrow books instead of buying them. We are a large francophone population in NYC. I have so many French books I would gladly give away.

Also the ebooks would be great to have. It is frustrating not to be able to buy french ebooks on Amazon. It would be great news if they could become available at the new French bookstore.

  • Yes, good idea. I would like to see Haitian and African literature included on it too.
  • I am thrilled. This is so needed in New York City. There used to be a great albeit small French bookstore in Rockefeller Center but sadly, it closed several years ago. As a French teacher/tutor, it is always difficult for me to find good quality French books. This is a great idea that couldn't come soon enough!

  • Very good Idea. Perhaps, the Embassy could be helpful in convincing the French publishers to allow residents abroad to download books from France to their e-readers. For the time being, it's impossible  to purchase digitalized books from Amazon.fr et al.

  • Great idea !! It would be greater if it could include african litterature in it. Thanks.

  • Indeed. Would be great to have a French/English bookstore in the UES.

Right now, one may be able to get a good selection of French books, or books originally in English translated to French at Rizzolis on 57th st., Babbo's Books in Windsor Terrace, Moustache Books in Park Slope, and both locations of Idlewild Books for mostly travel books and learning foreign languages, and Argosy Books next to FIAF for old and rare books.

And there's no link for the survey.

  • Great idea!

Would you mind to welcome Haitian literature in it?

  • Hi Lisa, thanks for your interest. The link is the word SURVEY in capital letters below the text.

  • I agree - a club would be even better.
