Arthur H in New York.
After 15 albums & 3 «victoires de la musique» (French Grammy Awards)
Pianist, singer, and songwriter Arthur H has been hailed as the quintessential French chanteur, a musical heir to Serge Gainsbourg with echoes of Tom Waits and Boris Vian. Arthur H is known for his melodic, cracked voice, electrifying live performances, and lyrics that fuse poetry with sensuality and humor.

Baba Love, Arthur H’s tenth studio album, includes songs in French and English and features duets with guest performers such as American MC Saul Williams, legendary French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Arthur H’s own sister, the singer Izia, among others. To produce Baba Love, Arthur H recorded on diverse instruments including an organ used by The Doors, a Vox Electra, a 1974 Rhodes piano, and an old mellotron from the 1960s to create a pure and organic sound. With musical influences going from Thelonious Monk to the Sex Pistols, jazz, blues, rock, electro, Middle Eastern, and gypsy music, each album of Arthur H is a brand new trip, a new imaginative and sonic exploration.

Seine Rive Gauche Coming to Life

Portzamparc-Quartier-Mass%C3%A9na.png?width=325

Seine Rive Gauche is beginning to come to life.

Covering 320 acres (130 hectares), it is, according to its developer, the largest development project in Paris since Haussmann’s time.

Seine Rive Gauche is part of a set of efforts aimed at addressing an urban planning issue that Paris has faced from even before Haussmann’s time: the westward movement of the city, and especially of tertiary sector jobs. Under Mayor Jacques Chirac (1977-1995), a major campaign was kicked off to rebalance Paris by developing the east of the city. The general thrust was maintained through two successive mayors, including a change of political color, making this a perfect example of an issue of municipal interest that never got the attention it deserved while Paris was under national government administration.

It is much too early to asseLocalisation.jpg?width=259ss the success of Seine-Rive Gauche, but we can note a couple of promising premises that were adopted. As opposed to what would be done in many places, the whole site was not treated as one project. It was broken down into six neighborhoods, each with its own coordinating architect, but with different architects and owners for each of the individual individual buildings. Seine Rive Gauche has the unity of having been all built around the same time, but otherwise there is tremendous diversity. It is also worthy of note the coordinating architects for each neighborhood include many of of France’s best architects with deep understanding of cities, and were selected through design-based competitions.

Neighborhoods of Seine-Rive Gauche (source: www.parisrivegauche.com)

The starting point of the project was an immense tract of land occupied by the tracks leading into the Gare d’Austerlitz and adjacent industrial facilities. The City of Paris created a dedicated development vehicle,SEMAPA, with the national train company, SNCF, and other public-sector participants, in 1985. Seine-Rive Gauche is therefore another example of the French model of publicly-driven urban development, where the role of the private sector is limited to developing individual plots within the overall plan.

Work began in the middle portion, Tolbiac, where it had been decided to situate the new national library, one of the projects of prestige of President François Mitterand, designed by Dominique Perrault and completed in 1995.

The Tolbiac Nord neighborhood, immediately to the north and south of the library, was coordinated by Roland Schweitzer. Its 800 apartments are all subsidized. It also includes office space, schools, a church, two parks, and a movie complex. It is most remarkable for its well-aligned buildings cut out of regular blocks, but with very different architectural treatment, separated by gardens.

The Tolbiac-Nord Neighborhood

A new artery, the Avenue de France, crosses the whole development, connecting the Gare d’Austerlitz and the Pont Charles-de-Gaulle with the Boulevard Masséna on the edge of Paris proper.

Paul Andreu was entrusted with the task of designing Paris’s most ambitious contemporary urban avenue. He set the rules for size and shape of the buildings along the avenue, for the use of the roadway, and so on. The detailed design of the streets was done by Jean-Michel Wilmotte for one portion and Patrick Celeste for another. The designers worked together with the objective of creating an avenue that was not only met the multiple needs of modern streets, but that maintained Paris’s high standards of pleasurable urban spaces. An example of this attention is that the sidewalks are twice as wide (8 meters) on the north side of the street, which gets the sun.

Avenue de France

The Masséna Nord neighborhood was launched in 1995, with Christian de Portzamparc as the coordinating architect. This area includes a number of large industrial buildings that were preserved and that now house Université Paris VII and an architecture school. On the rest of the site, Portzamparc implemented his theory of the “open block” (“îlot ouvert”): the buildings are free-standing, the design of the built form is based on principles of diversity and contrast. More detail on the design of this area is available atwww.arthitectuctural.com.

Model of the Masséna-Nord neighborhood, coordinated by Christian de Portzamparc

The City of Paris has given care to the selection of names for the streets of this neighborhood, focusing on important people of the twentieth century who, because much of Paris street-naming occurred so much earlier, had no street named after them. So there is a Rue Elsa Morante, a Rue Olivier Messiaen and a Rue René Goscinny (decorated with call-outs from his cartoon that have already become local attractions). The City has also taken advantage of the web site dedicated to the new neighborhood to provide biographies of all the people after whom streets in the area were named.

Work is underway on the infrastructure to cover the tracks. On top of the tracks and on the other side will be the Tolbiac-Chevaleret neighborhood, with Pierre Gangnet as the coordinating architect.

This neighborhood will have 1,000 new homes and 800,000 square feet (75,000 square meters) of offices, in addition to many other urban amenities. The key challenge here is the transition between the new neighborhood and the existing neighborhood, which will be made by a park with, in places, a balcony-promenade.

At the north-west end of the site, closest to the Paris city center, two neighborhoods are underway.

The Austerlitz-Nord neighborhood, coordinated by Christian Devillers, consists mostly of office buildings occupied by large corporations. Devillers is trying to carefully calibrate public and private use of spaces to ensure that these buildings do not impede the broader functioning of the city.

The Austerlitz-Sud neighborhood is awaiting the construction of the infrastructure that will allow it to be built over the train tracks. Coordinating architects Reichen et Robert have prepared a plan for a neighborhood with almost 1 million square feet (85,000 square meters) of office and retail space, aiming to become a focus of activity both for the people of the neighborhoods and for those with easy access to it through the Gare d’Austerlitz. AREP Architecture and Jean Nouvel will be in charge of the renovation of the station itself.

Yves Lion's project for the Masséna neighborhood

New development is continuing on the far south-east end of the Seine Rive Gauche territory, with the Masséna-Sud and Masséna-Bruneseau neighborhoods, for which Yves Lion is the coordinating architect.

Lion’s project aims primary to create a functional and pleasant neighborhood in a site that is ripe for development, but that is challenging due to its complexity, with major pieces of infrastructure like a highway and train tracks. The qualities of the plan have however been overshadowed by the debate about whether to allow, for this neighborhood on the very edge of the city proper, the lifting of the ordinary height regulations to allow buildings of 160 feet (50 meters) for residential purposes and 490 feet (150 meters) for non-residential purposes.

In the end, it was decided that this neighborhood should have Paris’s first high-rise residential building since the 1970s. The 16-story building is intended by its architect, Edouard François, to play an ecological role, disseminating into the city ecosystem types of vegetation that no longer penetrate it. It is expected to be completed in 2014. You can watch a video of François discussing this building together with disappearance as an ecological act, the carnal in the art of cooking, and other topics.

Edouard François's new building for the Masséna neighborhood

Although it is too early to come to a conclusion on the success of Seine Rive Gauche, it is noteworthy as the first example in a long time of an ambitious development for Paris calibrated to potentially have a positive effect on the city overall, and developed with care, incorporating much of France’s best urban thinking.

With the first 2 levels you will get the basics of the language to get you talking as soon as possible. It is also a good place to start if you haven’t taken any French courses in a long time or if you’re rusty. It is a great review and moves quite quickly.

Native French teachers incorporate basic grammar and vocabulary, real-life situations and plenty of speaking time into each session.

Already have a pretty good background in French but need some extra help communicating? Then you’re ready for our intermediate class. But get ready to mix things up a bit. You won’t find any textbook in this course! The intermediate class uses comics like Tintin and the beloved classic Le Petit Prince to get you thinking and speaking French while having fun.

Paralyzed from the neck down in a paragliding accident, Philippe (Tell No One star François Cluzet) has grown weary of the pitying attentions of his live-in help. So he hires Driss (Omar Sy, in a breakout performance), a recently paroled convict who only applied for the job in order to continue receiving his welfare payments. Gradually, these two men from very different worlds grow close, sharing in the joy and pain of each other’s lives in this hilarious and heartwarming crowd-pleaser from directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, who will be in attendance along with François Cluzet. The Weinstein Company plans to release the film May 2012.

3438636699?profile=originalThe Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) and The Museum at FIT (MFIT) are thrilled to announce Reel Fashion at FIAF and MFIT, a special week-long series of four recent insider documentaries on fashion. The series, presented in collaboration with the European television network ARTE, will be shown from February 21–27, 2012.

Presented between New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, Reel Fashion provides an intimate and candid glimpse of life behind the scenes of visionary fashion labels, shedding light on both the star designers and the unsung heroes who toil in relative obscurity to create the magic behind the world’s leading brands—while capturing the backstage pandemonium of the hours before a new collection is unveiled on the runway.  A special week-long series of four recent insider documentaries on fashion; director Loïc Prigent will introduce three of the documentaries and participate in a Q&A session following the screenings.

The series begins with three documentaries from renowned fashion-world chronicler Loïc Prigent, who turns his witty and insightful lens on four of the world’s most influential fashion houses. Prigent’s acclaimed film Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, a fly-on-the-wall portrait of the Creative Director of the venerable French house Louis Vuitton and his eponymous American line, documents, for the first time ever, the very modern mix of chaos and glamour behind the designer’s creative process. The Day Before: Fendi by Karl Lagerfeld follows the celebrated designer over the course of 36 hours—including a very long night—leading up to the fashion show for one of the world’s oldest brands. The Day Before: Proenza Schouler explores the dynamics between Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the visionary young American design team behind the label, as they set out to seduce buyers and press at the debut of their Fall 2009 collection.

The series concludes with David Teboul’s And ELLE Created Woman, presenting iconic images from the legendary magazine alongside clips of interviews with notable personalities. Teboul explores the remarkable role of ELLE as an arbiter of fashion and culture and its impressive shared history with the women’s movement over the past 60 years.

Idlewild Books, a new bookstore specializing in French,Spanish and Italian literature, officially opened its doors today, February 1st, coinciding with the start of Black History Month. For the whole month of February, Black history will be celebrated in North America. For the occasion, Idlewild highlights a few books in its collection written by Black authors or that treat themes pertaining to black culture worldwide.

For young readers (10 and up) or intermediate level readers:

"Rêve de foot"(Dreams of soccer) by Paul Bakolo Ngoi
3438636916?profile=original

Paul Bakolo Ngoi is an Italian author originally from Congo. He describes himself as having "the virus of writing in his blood". In fact, his grandfather, with whom he shares the same name also gave him the same love for writing, being himself one of the first ever Congolese writers.
In "Rêve de Foot", Ngoi narrates the story of Bilia, a young boy from Kinshasa who has to steal food to survive. Bilia is arrested and imprisoned after having stolen a carton of bananas. One day while in prison, one of the guards decides to organize a soccer match. Bilia is such a talented player that he gets noticed by a European journalist in the crowd who invites him to leave Africa in order to pursue a professional football career in Europe. Is this Bilia's second chance to start a new life?

"Esclave!" (Slave!) by Pascale Maret
3438636965?profile=original

The title alone of this book demands attention. A nameless girl is captured in Africa and transported to Venezuela where she will be bought and called "Ana". She works hard, trying to get used to her new and difficult life. But one day, she is accused of something she hasn't done and decides to take her life into her own hands and escape. This award-winning novel provides a fresh look at the triangular trade and the fight for freedom from the point of view of a young female slave.

Speaking of the idea for this novel, Pascale Maret says, " This novel is set in Venezuela, where I lived for three years. I was inspired by a house from the colonial period, a rare vestige of that time that has survived the modernization of Caracas. My youngest daughter was my model for the young heroin, Ana." Maret treats the theme of slavery with sensitivity and provides a prologue and an epilogue which give the historical context within which her story takes place, an invaluable addition for young readers.
For adults:

"Galadio" by Didier Daeninckx
3438637167?profile=original
Ulrich is a biracial boy living in 1930s Germany. He has a German mother and his father is an African soldier who was part of the french army that occupied Germany after the first world war. As nazism rises in Germany, Ulrich will have to tackle many difficulties; the growing resentment towards people of mixed racial heritage seen as "The Black Shame" of Germany, the attempt to sterilize them in order to maintain Aryan purity. How will Ulrich manage in this harsh new reality?
This novel delves into the often-overlooked treatment of Black people in Nazi Germany. Its author, Didier Daeninckx, is known for his historical fictions that often dig deeper into the uncomfortable areas of European History.

"Black Bazar" by Alain Mabanckou
3438637077?profile=original
This humorous books written by Congolese writer and literature professor Alain Mabanckou, plunges the reader into the every day life of the African diaspora of Paris highlighting their diversity. Speaking of his motivation behind Black Bazar, the award-winning author says:"Black people make themselves prisoners of the image white people have of them. So they think they are united, when it really is a patchwork community with disparate interests. I can tell you dozens of differences between Caribbeans, West Africans and Central Africans! That's really what I tried to portray in this novel."
The protagonist is a Congolese dandy whose wife leaves him for a drummer taking their daughter with her. To overcome his sadness, Fessologue (literally "Buttologist"- a name he gives himself from the conviction that he has a knack for guessing a woman's temperament from her derrière) decides to buy a typewriter and starts writing about his everyday life, and the places and people that inhabit it. The characters are witty and larger-than-life making for an enjoyable read. Still, this novel tackles deeper issues like love, sexuality, homesickness, colonization and a man dealing with his own feeling of weakness and cowardice making this novel as touching as it is entertaining.
"Aya" by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie
3438637274?profile=original

People interested in our French language classes will have the chance to discover Aya, the young woman from Côte d'Ivoire whose sole ambition is that of becoming a doctor. Her parents, however, want her to marry a nice  boy that she doesn't like.
This graphic novel set in the capital of Ivory Coast in the late 1970s shatters the conception of African countries crippled by war and poverty and unveils the world of an ordinary African girl who resists parental authority and tries to follow her ambitions in this dynamic and amusing story infused with local slang and African humor.
We look forward to seeing you at our store to pick up your copy or at one of our classes!

"Green Connection" contest

We are very pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 "Green Connection" contest, dedicated this year to the theme of forest protection and conservation. Started in 2011 by the Cultural Services Department of the Embassy of France, the "Green Connection" program challenges American high school students to think about the biggest environmental issues of the 21st century and then submit individual proposals for local or personal environmental protection initiatives. Each proposal must be submitted in the form of a short audiovisual presentation (video clip).

Students with the best proposals will be invited to participate in an all-expense-paid educational trip to France from July 2nd to July 13th, 2012.

In order to encourage students to enter the "Green Connection" contest, we invite science teachers and teachers of French to offer one or more activities on the theme of forest protection and conservation. The GoodPlanet Foundation, partner of the "Green Connection 2012," has provided a number of online resources to help teachers increase student awareness about forest conservation, including:

- The film Of Forest and Men (7 mn)
- The 20 posters of the educational exhibition dedicated to the forest:  The Forest: a Living Community
- A digital version of the book Of Forests and Men
- The photos presented for the exhibition Of Forests and Men

This material is adaptable to a variety of teaching approaches and pedagogical activities, depending on the needs of the science or French class in question. These activities will offer students the chance to answer the following questions:
- What is a forest?
- Why are forests threatened?
- How can we act now to protect our forests for the future?

All schools that submit student proposals to the contest will receive the 20 posters of the educational exhibition dedicated to the forest:  The Forest: a Living Community and  a copy of and the book accompanying the exhibition Of Forests and Men.

Detailed information about the "Green Connection 2012" is available in the attached file. You are also welcome to view the video proposals from last year's contest and video from the prize winners' trip to Paris and La Rochelle.

Students Win for Turning Lady Liberty Green

Abigail Meisel for SchoolBookHale Sheffield and Maya Foxman (front, left to right) with their French teachers Alessandra De Meo (left) and Brigitte De Wever, after learning about their award.

Dec. 20, 2011, 11:12 a.m.

The French Embassy in New York has chosen two students from a Brooklyn middle school, M.S. 51 William Alexander, as winners in a trans-Atlantic competition to create an original artwork in celebration of the Statue of Liberty’s 125th anniversary and French-American friendship.

The schoolmates, a seventh grader, Hale Sheffield, and a sixth grader, Maya Foxman, were among 20 winners, all French and American schoolchildren, chosen from a pool of more than 4,000 students, ranging in age from pre-K to 12th grade, the embassy announced on Friday.

Named “Rock the Statue Green,” the environmentally minded contest called for creations made from recycled or green materials. But it also accepted performance-based projects, like songs and interpretive dances, while budding belletrists were allowed to submit essays linking the statue to an environmental theme. All entries were submitted electronically.

“I was just getting into school when I saw all these texts from my mom, saying I’d won,” Hale said. “I thought, ‘Well it’s not April Fool’s Day, so maybe this is true!’ ”

An aspiring singer-songwriter, Hale won a grand prize of round-trip tickets for two to Paris with her video featuring an untitled paean to the statue, which begins: “The story of her is the story of change. You can’t tell me you don’t know her name.”

Maya earned a “coup de coeur” (the equivalent of an honorable mention) with her Claymation video “Homegrown Liberty,” depicting a house plant morphing into the image of the statue. She created the animation using the editing software iMovie, which she learned about at an after-school workshop in animation.

M.S. 51 is a school for the gifted and talented that specializes in performing and visual arts, the principal, Lenore Di Leo Berner, said.

“We encouraged children to see the Statue of Liberty as a new symbol of protection for the environment,” said Fabrice Jaumont, education attaché at the French Embassy. “We received an overwhelming number of submissions and then we tried to make an impossible choice.”

Abigail Meisel was a teacher for 10 years and now frequently writes about education.

One To World's Global Classroom program is beginning exciting, new classes with children in Harlem and need YOU to introduce them to France, French culture and French art!

For over 25 years, Global Classroom has brought trained, international volunteers to schools all over New York City to educate about culture and global issues and break down stereotypes. We are currently looking for French volunteers to lead classes in an elementary school in our "France and the Francophone World through Art" workshops. Last year, children recreated scenes from "La Guerre des Boutons" and painted their own versions of Monet's Haystacks. No need to be an expert in art, just an desire to share culture, teach kids and have fun!
