French Language Acquisition Teacher Position
Overview Program:
The Boerum Hill School for International Studies, an International Baccalaureate World School, aims to create a better and more peaceful world through the study of language - to celebrate and understand cultural perspectives and empower our future leaders to develop innovative solutions that impact the world. Our focus is to enhance student French proficiency and experience of language by meeting students where they are, whether they are beginners or fluent. Position Description:
We are looking for NYC DOE certified French Teacher to teach in our Middle School or High School (grades 6-12). The position requires someone who will work with their colleagues to develop curriculum and daily lesson aligned to the International Baccalaureate teaching framework. We are looking for someone who is fluent and bilingual in French and English. Candidates should have a passion for teaching and have a global perspective and see the importance of language as a tool, to communicate and unite people and cultures around the world. We offer immersive French classes to non-French speakers and through our ICT classes we are the only school in the U.S to offer immersive French courses to children with special needs.

Job Requirements:

  • Build a classroom culture in which students love math
  • Provide clear and consistently high-quality math instruction for all students
  • Create instructional lesson plans and classroom activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in a meaningful learning experience
  • Manage and support an organized and professional classroom that is conducive to learning.
  • Implement instructional strategies and resources that are aligned with the rigor of the Common Core to meet the needs of all students, including those with varying backgrounds, learning styles and special needs
  • Motivate students to think critically and take ownership over their own learning
  • Drive academic outcomes by analyzing student work and studying data, and implementing high-leverage instructional moves to ensure dramatic gains for all students
  • Support student and school needs in preparing to be successful on the NYS State Exam

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; Masters degree preferred

  • Hold NYS certification in content area or working towards certification is preferred

The Position:

The position requires an educational leader, with a highly developed level of interpersonal empathy. The successful candidate will be able to navigate complex cultures, and demonstrate an international mind-set. He/she will bring a rich experience with national and international curricular frameworks. Personal attributes expected include self-motivation, the ability to think both strategically and tactically, and the flexibility to successfully work within a diverse and demanding school environment.

In partnership with the School Principal, the Assistant Principal will:

  • Understand and can articulate the school’s Mission and Guiding Principles to students, faculty, families, staff, and the public outside the school
  • Promote the School’s educational philosophy, initiatives, and the development and sustainability of a collective and vibrant middle school community
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what is required to develop small, supportive, professional learning communities
  • Encourage and designs opportunities for collaborative decision-making among faculty, students, families, and staff
  • Encourage and creates opportunities for healthy critique
  • Engage enthusiastically with and responds positively to the needs of students, faculty, families, and staff

Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Support and Success

  • Meet with advisors and counselors who need additional support regarding students of concern socially or behaviorally
  • Meet with students, teachers, and parents to support students with repeated or more serious behavioral concerns
  • Lead communication with parents regarding discipline
  • Meet weekly with the referral team to oversee support for all students with academic and/or social emotional concerns

Faculty and Staff

  • Goal setting and observation of teachers in collaboration with the Principal
  • Meet weekly with all grade level teams regarding implementation of Advisory Program
  • Manage annual schedule for the School
  • Analyze needs for schedule changes for following year driven by curricula, staffing, space needs of the School
  • Assist School Principal in the recruiting and selection of all faculty

Curriculum

  • Lead Professional Development for teachers & staff
  • Work with School Principal to oversee changes and implementation of curriculum
  • Assist in presentation of curriculum information to parents (e.g. curriculum evenings, parent coffees)

Education, Work Experience, and Skills Requirements

  • M.A. or M.Ed. in educational leadership, administration and supervision, curriculum and instruction, or related field
  • New York School Building Leader Certification
  • Experience in a leadership role, preferably in an international, multi-lingual setting
  • Excellent leadership, inter-personal, communication skills
  • Experience leading and implementing social emotional programs to promote academic success
  • Teaching experience in a middle school, preferably in an international, multi-lingual setting
  • Knowledge of current research in education, administration and supervision
  • Experience evaluating and appraising teachers, preferably in an international setting
  • Effective management of conflict in the workplace
  • Native French Speaker Preferred
