I knew there was a great intellect and a connection with the Gouvernement Francais when I first read your blogs and discussions. You are a whirlwind of energy and purpose. I appreciate what you are doing; it gives me hope that the serious and expanded study of French and francophone cultures can be revived and take hold aux Etats-Unis.
I think that the current and future study of foreign languages necessarily entails cultural exchanges of the kind that involve Internet facilitation. In other words, e-pals, live chats with counterparts in the target culture's country, sharing of cultural impressions such as the Cultura program between MIT and Paris Institut de Technologie. Public schools in the US tend to follow traditional models (textbooks, overhead projectors, an occasional film), and suffer from lack of funding (and, dare I say, all too often, inspiration.) Innovative programs are needed to infuse classrooms with computer savvy and technology to allow schools to use 21st century methodologies.
People are social creatures. Language is the most accessible tool we possess with which to exercise our humanness. It should be facilitated via the widespread use of technology in the classroom--especially communicative technologies provided by the Internet. Channels should be open between countries to allow for cultural sharing and peaceful exchange. If resources are to be made available to schools for foreign language study, it will do the most good where it can facilitate cultural exchange. Face-to-face with their peers in France, students are inspired to find the words they need to communicate.
We have entered a new century where, particularly in the United States, young people watch TV and play computer games much more than they study books. I can say this from first-hand experience as a high school French and English teacher, and from observing my own children and their friends. They expect schools to entertain them, and do not study what they find uninspiring. Modern credentialing programs in the US talk of the importance of making education relevant to the students; using their own interests to reach out to them. At the high school level, what is most interesting to students are other students. Those who study foreign language are intrigued to find out what their peers in another country think, feel, do, on a day-to-day basis. So why not put them in touch with one another via the most prevalent and modern technology available?
I am interested in hearing if you know of any such programs in France or here in the US. I would be interested in working with you to create this sort of exchange in schools here.
Bonjour Fabrice!
Lundi a 18h30, Charles street.
