meaning of words

i remember my first year in the usa, a very magical year,  even though i had a hard time with the meaning of words for example the word "oil" in english 1 meaning which is  "oil to cook", but if you want to translate oil to french you will end up with two meanings huile pour cuisinier or huile equivalent to lotion. my experience wih this word was to me quite funny i used it once in english class and i quote "yes miss i use oil on my  skin every morning"and the teacher looked at me and you coud see in her eyes that she had no idea of what i was talking about.luckily one of my friend told me that in english you do not say oil you  say lotion. That is how the word lotion came into my life.
DID you ever have a moment when you try to say something in english and nobody understands what you are talking about ?
