Smith Street Workshop is expanding its French Immersion preschool in 2020! The Maternelle provides an exceptional preschool experience grounded in the fundamentals of progressive education, child development, and language learning.
After a decade of teaching in bilingual classrooms in New York City, Olivia Ramsey opened Smith Street Workshop in 2015, offering tutoring, test prep, and French courses for all ages. In 2016 the Workshop opened a French Immersion morning playgroup. Determined to welcome more families, the team created a French Immersion curriculum that blends the best elements of prominent education philosophies, and Smith Street Maternelle opened in Carroll Gardens in 2018.
Early Childhood theorists have documented the benefits of learning through play for well over a century. Rudolf Steiner, Reggio Emilia, and Maria Montessori have all established wellknown and prominent schools of thought, which each highlight the importance of learning through play.
The curriculum at the Maternelle is a blend of the best elements of these philosophies, with a few modern updates based on new research, specifically the DevelopmentalInteraction approach.
In the classrooms at the Maternelle, students will find a nurturing environment where they feel loved, heard, and understood. Teachers do everything they can to instill a sense of security and openness in the classroom so children can explore, learn, and develop at their own speed, while acquiring a second language at the same time.
Above all, the school is committed to providing a warm, nurturing and secure environment for children to explore and learn, make social connections, and develop their expressive and receptive language skills.
In order to offer spots to more families in the fall, Smith Street Maternelle will open a brand new location at 388 Carroll St., welcoming students for the 2020–2021 school year.
Smith Street Maternelle offers programs for children ages two to five, and gives parents the flexibility to choose from half, full, or extended days.
