As soon as they arrive in another culture, the transcultural dialogue starts. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is impossible. The stories in this series explore the multiple dialogues that take place when people arrive in a new culture and new society. Films hailing from Senegal, Tunisia, the USA, Curacao, Cape Verde, Belgium, Morocco, France, Hungary, Serbia and more are part of the program.

Watch THE PIROGUE

Baye Laye is the captain of a fishing pirogue. Like many of his Senegalese compatriots, he sometimes dreams of new horizons, where he can earn a better living for his family. When he is offered to lead one of the many pirogues that head towards Europe via the Canary Island, he reluctantly accepts the job, knowing full-well the dangers that lie ahead. Leading a group of 30 men who don't all speak the same language, some of whom have never seen the sea, Baye Laye will confront many perils in order to reach the distant coasts of Europe.

Camp de Thiaroye (FESPACO 1988) - Gala Screening - Zoom Q&Ahttps://newyorkinfrench.net/forum/topics/camp-de-thiaroye-fespaco-1988-gala-screening-zoom-q-a2021-11-15T12:31:02.000Z2021-11-15T12:31:02.000ZNY ADIFFhttps://newyorkinfrench.net/members/NYADIFF

During World War II, Diatta (Ibrahima Sane) is a Senegalese student serving as a sergeant as his country fights alongside the French, even though that same nation raided his village and killed much of his family years earlier.
