Michel Wieviorka

Michel Wieviorka will present the main ideas in his new book, Pour la prochaine gauche (Robert Laffont,February 2011). His talk will focus on how the French Left can and should drawon the social sciences to articulate a new kind of leftist politics that speaksto the social realities and expectations in today’s France. Multiculturalism, affirmative action, national identity, ethnic statistics, immigrantpopulations: how can these pressing social issues be incorporated through aninformed use of sociological, political and historical analysis into a coherentpolitical project that reaffirms leftist values?

Michel Wieviorka is a sociologist, professor at the École des HautesEtudes en Sciences Sociales, director of the Fondation Maison des Sciences del’Homme, former president of the International Sociological Association and compagnon de route of the French Socialist Party.
