Alwan for the Arts, New York’s leader in promoting the diverse culture and arts of the Middle East, presents So You Think You Can Dabkeh, a series exploring the traditional and popular line dances of the Levant region of the Middle East. Through participatory and performance events in Manhattan and Brooklyn from September 8 - October 13, 2012, Alwan will celebrate one of the most publicly performed and beloved traditional dances of Arab Americans. The events are open to the public and funded in part by NYSCA.
About the Artist
The oil paintings of French artist Sylvie Vermandel, which the artist refers to as ‘jewel paintings,’ are simultaneously representational and symbolic, reflective of the beautiful natural world that surrounds us as well as the spirituality and light that underscores everything we experience. Rather than using a palette, Vermandel mixes her colors directly on the canvas in thin layers, creating varying contrasts so that the observer is able to attain new perspectives on the painting. She adds an entirely new dimension of light and texture by incorporating such elements as crystals, gold leaf and silver sequins into each piece. What results is a harmony of color, tone and light that celebrates the artist’s great love for Mother Earth and is designed to bring out the positive side of life through sy

Le Taste of France Tour is a 10-day celebration of French cuisine and culture that will be taking place throughout the United States from September 19th, leading up to Le Taste of France Show in New York ending on Sunday, September 30th. This national French Lifestyle campaign is in honor of “La Fête de la Gastronomie” in France.
Le Taste of France Tour will feature events ranging from all aspects of French culture: Restaurants; Drinks; Picnics; Desserts; Fashion; Beauty; Kids; Sports and Arts. Everyone across the United States is invited to participate and celebrate French Lifestyle and products.

This second half of the retrospective features Epstein’s sound films, a varied collection of works comprising the astounding films he made on the islands of Brittany (including MOR’ VRAN, CHANSON D’ARMOR, and L’OR DES MERS), a variety of short films commissioned by entities such as the National Federation of Construction and the United Nations, several rarely-screened narrative features, and the exquisite LE TEMPESTAIRE, which marked Epstein’s return to Brittany.

Part of the cinematic troupe of R.W. Fassbinder (to whom she was briefly married) and the ostensible subject of Jean-Jacques Schuhl’s fictionalized biography Ingrid Caven (winner of the Prix Goncourt), Ingrid Caven is perhaps best known an extraordinary musical performer, a kind of cabaret singer pushing the genre into the 21st century. Filmmaker Bertrand Bonello (House of Pleasures) attended one of her performances at the Cité de la Musique; he was so affected by it that he knew he just had to film her. Caven offers a rich repertoire of songs in French, German and occasionally English; at times, she dispense with words and simply plays with sounds. Her pieces range from traditional ballads to abstract performance pieces. Really a tribute from one artist to another, this is a unique opportunity to experience Ingrid Caven’s special magic.

The title of Philippe Béziat’s lovely film about the staging of Verdi’s masterwork at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in France could be said to have a double meaning. On the one hand, it refers to Met Opera favorite Natalie Dessay as she hones her articulation, gestures and movements on her way to incarnating Violetta, Verdi’s tragic courtesan. On the other, it captures the wonder that opera is: the way in which so many elements—musical, vocal, dramatic, choreographic, scenographic—come together to create a single aesthetic experience. Much more than a backstage look at the contemporary staging of a classic, the film captures the highly detailed work of both director Jean-François Sivadier and musical director Louis Langrée, lingering over notes and lyrics, trying to get the expression of their meaning to be as precise as possible, and the efforts by the singers to integrate their own performances into the production’s overal

Brian De Palma exhibits great panache and a diabolical mastery of frequent, small surprises in his cinematically most ingenious movie since his magical comedy-of-coincidences, Femme Fatale. With tongue planted in cheek, or maybe not—it’s up to you to decide—De Palma turns French director Alain Corneau’s 2010 Love Crime into a droll, erotic tale of female competition. Noomi Rapace more than matches her performance in the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as the assistant to an unscrupulous advertising honcho (Rachel McAdams), who steals her ideas and acts as if it’s all good sport. It’s great fun until De Palma zeros in on the fury in Rapace’s eyes. The De Palma trademarks are all present and deployed with coolly calculated abandon: a brilliant use of split screen; a confusion of identical twins; dreams within dreams; and shoes to die for.
