Alwan for the Arts, New York’s leader in promoting the diverse culture and arts of the Middle East, presents So You Think You Can Dabkeh, a series exploring the traditional and popular line dances of the Levant region of the Middle East. Through participatory and performance events in Manhattan and Brooklyn from September 8 - October 13, 2012, Alwan will celebrate one of the most publicly performed and beloved traditional dances of Arab Americans. The events are open to the public and funded in part by NYSCA.
About the Artist
The oil paintings of French artist Sylvie Vermandel, which the artist refers to as ‘jewel paintings,’ are simultaneously representational and symbolic, reflective of the beautiful natural world that surrounds us as well as the spirituality and light that underscores everything we experience. Rather than using a palette, Vermandel mixes her colors directly on the canvas in thin layers, creating varying contrasts so that the observer is able to attain new perspectives on the painting. She adds an entirely new dimension of light and texture by incorporating such elements as crystals, gold leaf and silver sequins into each piece. This second half of the retrospective features Epstein’s sound films, a varied collection of works comprising the astounding films he made on the islands of Brittany (including MOR’ VRAN, CHANSON D’ARMOR, and L’OR DES MERS), a variety of short films commissioned by entities such as the National Federation of Construction and the United Nations, several rarely-screened narrative features, and the exquisite LE TEMPESTAIRE, which marked Epstein’s return to Brittany.
Organized in collaboration with the Cinémathèque Française and Sarah Keller (Colby College), and with support from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.
Unless otherwise noted, all films are in French with projected English subtitles.

The line was also presented during Miami Function Fashion Week, in Boston, Massachusetts at the Museum of Fine Arts, and in Washington DC as a part of NOVA Fashion Events.

Jiří Kylián, one of the greatest contemporary choreographers, uses the creation and staging of a new piece as an introduction into his special world. For the premiere of the new work, Kylián returned to his native Prague, a city that has been a constant source of inspiration for him; the film also includes sequences from several of Kylián’s signature dance works, including Bella Figura and Petite Mort.
