  • Apr 25, 2011 at 2:00pm to Jun 1, 2011 at 6:00pm
  • Location: Pearl Studios
  • Description:

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) invites you to join us for the fourth edition of our annual World Nomads Festival, which this year showcases the arts and culture of Morocco. The country’s unique geographical location has made it a crossroad for ancient trade routes, and continues to contribute to its importance as a migratory highway for ideas and peoples. Today’s Morocco shines as a hub of traditional and modern creative expression, where ancient cultural practices thrive, kept alive by a full spectrum of master artisans, performing artists, and more, while innovations are woven into vibrant contemporary artistic forms. To many people across the world, Morocco is known as the site of rich scenic locations and beautiful film sets. Building on the stellar accomplishments of veteran directors of past decades before them, a new generation of filmmakers has emerged in the past ten years as a fresh, raw and bold cinematic voice, engaged with the complexities of present-day Morocco. This series highlights contemporary issues that pervade artistic production in Morocco: the legacy of the years of political repression, undocumented workers' migration to Europe, Casablanca as an urban metropolis, and Morocco's increasing commitment to cultural diversity.

Highlights of the World Nomads Morocco CinémaTuesdays series include Faouzi Bensaidi’s A Thousand Months, winner of two awards at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival; the remarkable 1935 short film View of the Main Square and the Small Square from director Gabriel Veyre, who trained with the Lumièr

    About the Artist

Nature becomes an abstract stream of strong and sharp tones in French-American painter Dominique Boutaud’s captivating canvases. Descriptive titles tease the viewer with the suggestion of a figurative interpretation, but Boutaud focuses our attention on texture, movement and color combinations. Using amalgamations of many conventional and unusual methods of application, she sets in place superbly tactile encounters, bringing broad brushstrokes up against meticulous drips and fine scrapings. These tactile juxtapositions often evoke tensions between figure and setting, depth and flatness, but most of all they convey movement and temperature.

Whether dark and solemn or ebullient and bold, Boutaud offers her viewers freedom: to explore, to interpret, to

  • Location: Medicine Show Theater
  • Description: The Medicine Show Theater, the venerable avant-garde off-off-Broadway institution that began as the Open Theater and is now in its 41st year, is presenting an epic play about three iconic cultural figures: LIVING WITH HISTORY: Camus, Sartre, de Beauvoir.  The play, set during the German

The Medicine Show theater is at 549 West 52nd Street, between 11th and 10th Avenues, 3rd floor.  Performance times are Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays and
