Searing reds and yellows, deep, mysterious blues and surprising, calming speckles of white meet in these compositions, conveying landscapes emotional, natural and immaterial that entreat the eye and propose a journey.

  • Night Moves: Claude Chabrol & Arthur Penn

  • Dec 3, 2010 at 1:00pm to Dec 9, 2010 at 2:00pm
  • Location: http://www.filmlinc.com/
  • Description: “I’m known mainly for making movies about people shooting and cutting each other up,” remarked Arthur Penn of his own body of work, though he might just as soon have been speaking about the films of his French contemporary, Claude Chabrol. The most prolific member of the Nouvelle Vague, Chabrol averaged a movie per year from his debut in 1958 through his final film in 2009, specializing in delicious Hitchcockian thrillers and scathing indictments of bourgeois decadence. Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, Penn was emerging as the American filmmaker most directly influenced by the New Wave, with the existential paranoia of Mickey One and the form-shattering jolt of Bonnie and Clyde (a movie famously passed on by both Godard and Truffaut). On the occasion of their recent passing, we salute these giants of cinema—and longtime friends of the Film Society—with a combined retrospective. • Dec 5, 2010 to Dec 7, 2010
  • Location: Lumen gallery
  • Description: Every year, two million people climb into cable cars suspended above the East River to visit Roosevelt Island. But from March through December 2010, the cable cars linking Manhattan and Roosevelt Island ceased to run. The job of renovating the New York icon fell to the French company Pomagalski, leader in urban cable transport. Behind this immense project nestled in between skyscrapers were the men who made it all possible. Two photographers, Carol Caver and Jonas Cuénin, painstakingly documented the activities of the American, French, Swiss and Canadian team throughout the entire renovation. One photographer witnessed the project from the exterior while the other observed the interior scenes, capturing fleeting moments of New York history from all angles. With their own interpretation, the photographers pay homage to the story of these workers.Carol Caver is self-taught photographer who has discovered her life-long passion.
