    Négritude, an experimental multi-disciplinary exhibition at Exit Art, explores the visionary 20th century political and artistic movement of the same name — coined by the Martinican poet, playwright, and politician Aimé Césaire in the 1930s — which flourished among Black intellectuals in post-World War I Paris and later spread to Africa, the United States and the Caribbean.

  • Description: "Till the last drop of gas" is a photo exhibition about a lonely motorcycle roadtrip, from the East coast (Daytona Beach) to the west coast, in San Francisco. After more than 5760 miles and 20 days riding and meeting people on the southern roads, David Folch, a french photojournalist, is offering his vision of the landscapes and the faces of the USA. It's also a tribute to an ending time, the fossil fuel that soon will be more difficult to find. Crossing 10 States (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California) and several national parks (Ocala Forest, Big Bend, White Sands, Grand Canyon and Death Valley), the trip ended at the Golden Gate bridge. The opening of this photo essay is July 8th from 6 to 9pm at Splashlight Studios, "One Hudson Square", 75 Varick, New York 10013.

  • Description: Two extraordinary pop music artists from North-Africa (the Maghreb), Algerian-born Idir and Morocco’s Najat Aatabou, will share a bill in “A Night in the Maghreb,” a concert on July 18 in Avery Fisher Hall that will introduce the world-renowned performers to an American audience for the first time.Both artists have Imazighen (Berber is the more-commonly-known word, but is considered derogatory) roots which have influenced their musical style and expression. Paris-based Idir—born in the Kabylia region of Algeria—has been at the forefront of socially and politically relevant French-Algerian music since the 1970s.
