Emmanuel Fremin Gallery is proud to present its second collaboration with minimalist artist Francois Nanjo Shunsuke, multi tasked artist, his photographsplunges the viewer in an imaginary world where minimalism pursue the question of the representation of the Human through mediums such as photography,painting and installations. Creator of of the Artist Group named COMPOSIT in Toulouse, Francois currently lives and works in both Tokyo and Paris.Press release:When surveying the artist's body of work, the entire range is embedded in the concept of Heterotopia as explored by Michel Foucault in Of OtherSpaces (1967) . According to Foucault, Utopia is a place separate from reality and time as we know it, existing only in our imagination. It has its ownlogic of functioning, and does not expose the world we are living in. On the contrary, Heterotopia, while also in charge of its own logic and time, can belocated in our daily life. Theaters, cemeteries or airports are all examples we might find in our reality, a space located within the space. In addition toexploring and exposing these heterotopias, the artist's work aims to reveal the traces of memory our lives leave imprinted in this world. These traceshaunt our life and might stick to our surroundings only to reemerge in new forms. Francois' recent work often extracts these haunting pasts of spacesor things. By observing the traces of these memories, he can find a departure point to new personal myths."Impact" is about realities that condensate shapes as they can be observed on things. The wreckage of a crashed car reminds us of the most sincerelytragic moments and the ghosts they possess. The focus in these photos is on the impact itself that shapes out a sculptural distortion. By extracting thesewrecks and placing them in a neutral, blank environment, we are allowed to simply observe the traces of the impact. The form left behind is given new life,a counterpoint to the tragedy it perhaps stems from. The viewer can appreciate the beauty of destruction detached from the direct connotation of tragicdisaster; the intricacies of its state can be inspected, the innards of the wreckage, its lines and juxtapositions.As a person of mixed cultural and racial background, Francois has always had an inherent curiosity in interstitial, mixed, or suspended spaces and statuses.The white foggy world that he has been working for so long is a metaphor of Heterotopia (or Utopia, some would say). Sketching these impact traces is also away to explore the possibility of creating new tales and concepts.Impact will run from September 17 to October 30 2010.
