I AM AMERICA is the result of the research of the Open Program of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards into the meaning and consequent actions that emerge from the poetic word. Directed by Mario Biagini and based on the works of Allen Ginsberg (1927-1997), I AM AMERICA is a stream of dramatic structures featuring song, rhythm, dance, poetry and action, in which the poetic word sheds light on our place and function in our given social, economic and cultural landscape.I AM AMERICA explores this terrain through the personification of America, as Ginsberg depicts her in his poem America. She speaks of herself, of hope, of contradictions, desires and failures. She is a goddess with many faces. Her offspring are those who give body to her impulses, each one according to his or her own unpredictable paths. America is a mother with many children.I AM AMERICA is a dialogue: Her children ask for answers, and America responds. She tells her story, says where she comes from and what she’s looking for. Her children listen in silence and one after another they respond to her: some have suffered while others still desire, there are those who fight, those who fail, those who have profited, those who remember, those who pray, those who ask themselves what they are here to do. Each one calls out; each one recognizes in the other their common origin. We are America.(Open to the public, $10 suggested donation at the door.)
