Haberdasher Theatre presents fabled French novelist and playwright Marie Nimier’s first play to be translated and put on in English in America, Another Year, Another Christmas (Noël revient tous les ans), translated by playwright Peter Schulman. Mr. Schulman has deftly translated Marie Nimier’s love of wordplay and French sounds (which often don’t make sense but are musical) to American sounds and audiences.

Marie Nimier is one of France’s beloved novelists, songwriters, children’s book writer and screenwriters. She is known for her surreal and magical writings such as Sirène (Mermaid), and Les Inséparables (The Inseparable Ones)  and for her daring plays. Another Year, Another Christmas was first performed in Paris at Le Théâtre du Rond-Point to sold out performances, but surprisingly none of her plays have been performed in the US until now.

Artfully Directed by Lindsay Arber, Another Year, Another Christmas is an experimental and inventive work which chronicles the lack of communication and spoken as well as unspoken tragedies that follow the troubled relationship between a mother, powerhouse Linda Blackstock, a son, Brian D. Hills, and the son’s various girlfriends, all played by Ashley Bacon, who get together once a year for a Christmas Eve dinner. It is a play about love, conflict and the passage of time.
