Emmanuel Nunes (1941-2012) was the leading Portuguese composer of the 20th century, writing highly original music marked by its radical virtuosity, precision of craft and unrepentant modernism. Despite his international importance, Nunes’s music is completely unknown to American audiences today and almost never performed. This immersive portrait concert focuses on his music for viola and features American violist John Stulz of the Paris based Ensemble Intercontemporain. Listeners will experience a wide variety of works in chamber ensembles ranging from Viola and Alto Flute, String Trio, Solo Viola and Three Violas. Joining Mr. Stulz will be talented young guest musicians with affiliations ranging from NYU, the
Senza Misura Quartet, Ensemble ACJW and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Emmanuel Nunes (1941-2012) was the leading Portuguese composer of the 20th century, writing highly original music marked by its radical virtuosity, precision of craft and unrepentant modernism.
