Five interactive workshops in French・B2-C2
ART IN NYC
From Studio to Collection: Inside the Art Market
How does an artwork move from an artist’s studio into a gallery, an art fair, an auction house - and eventually a collection? Who shapes its visibility, price, reputation, and value along the way?
This five-part workshop follows the circulation of an artwork through five key stages of the art market, combining modern, post-war, and contemporary art with a practical look at how the market actually works.
But this is not just a lecture about the art market - participants put it into play.
Each workshop begins with an illustrated introduction to artworks, artists, specialized vocabulary, and real-world market situations. In the second half, participants work in small groups, take on the roles of artists, gallerists, curators, collectors, advisors, buyers, or sellers, create their own dialogue and scenario, and play it out in French.
THE FIVE WORKSHOPS
1 - THE ARTIST’S STUDIO
How does an artwork first enter the market? We begin with the artist, the work, and the early encounters that can shape visibility, representation, and value.
2 - THE GALLERY
How do galleries select, position, present, and sell artists? Participants explore the relationships among artists, dealers, and collectors - and what happens when an artwork becomes both an artistic object and something for sale.
3 - THE ART FAIR
Step inside the dynamics of an international art fair: visibility, competition, pricing, negotiation, and the decisions made by galleries, collectors, and advisors.
4 - THE AUCTION HOUSE
Estimates, provenance, bidding, and the secondary market: how does an artwork reach auction, and what actually happens when a public price is created?
5 - THE COLLECTION
What happens after an artwork is acquired? We look at collecting decisions, documentation, appraisal, long-term value, and the life of an artwork within a collection.
Throughout the series, landmark works and important developments in modern, post-war, and contemporary art are woven into the scenarios - so participants engage with the artworks themselves while experiencing how they are presented, discussed, bought, sold, and collected.
