With the fall semester coming up, it’s the perfect time to start a new hobby, strengthen your language skills, or finally begin learning French. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have experience with the language, New York City offers several excellent opportunities to learn in immersive and engaging environments. Two standout organizations are L’Alliance New York and Coucou, each offering unique teaching styles, flexible scheduling, and programs designed for learners at every level.
L’Alliance New York:
For over 125 years, L’Alliance New York has been a center for French language and francophone culture in the tri-state area. The organization offers fully immersive French classes for toddlers, children, teens, and adults, all taught by native French-speaking instructors. Students can attend classes in person at the Manhattan or Montclair campuses or participate online, making it easy to fit French into almost any schedule.

One of L’Alliance’s greatest strengths is the variety of courses available. Adult learners can choose from General French classes, Skill Strengthening classes, Culture classes, Workshops, Trial Classes, or Private Lessons. General French courses focus on developing all four major language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while Skill Strengthening classes allow students to improve specific areas such as grammar, pronunciation, conversation, or listening comprehension. Culture classes introduce learners to topics such as French literature, film, politics, art, slang, and French for travelers, while workshops provide shorter opportunities to improve pronunciation or explore French culture. Students who are unsure whether the immersive environment is right for them can also take a 45-minute trial class for $20, with the fee applied toward future registration.
L’Alliance also offers flexible scheduling and pricing depending on how quickly students want to progress.
General French classes include:
Leisurely Pace: 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks – $379
Regular Pace: 3 hours per week for 10 weeks – $599, or a 5-week option for $379
Accelerated Pace: 6 hours per week for 5 weeks – $599
Intensive Pace: 3 hours per day, Monday through Friday, for 2 weeks – $599
Workshops: Beginning at $59
Private Lessons: $88 per hour, with special package pricing available for 15- and 30-hour bundles. Learning materials and registration fees are separate from tuition.
Courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), beginning with an optional Introduction to French course and progressing through Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert levels. Students who already know some French can complete a free placement test followed by a one-on-one discussion with an instructor to determine the appropriate level. Those who are completely new to French may choose either the optional introductory course, which combines English and French instruction, or begin directly in the immersive Beginner A1 course.
L’Alliance also provides one of the most extensive youth French programs in New York City. Children from toddlers through high school can enroll in age-specific classes that use games, songs, stories, arts and crafts, role-playing, and collaborative activities to build language skills in a fun and supportive environment. Programs are available for both native and non-native French speakers, and older students can even prepare for the DELF Junior French certification exam. Beyond weekly classes, L’Alliance also offers French-immersion preschools, summer camps, holiday camps, and a partnership with CNED for native French-speaking children.
Coucou:
Coucou offers a different approach to learning French by combining structured grammar instruction with consistent conversation practice. Rather than relying on one type of class, Coucou’s custom 7-level method is built around two complementary learning experiences: Signature Classes and Conversation Labs. Together, these create a flexible learning path that allows students to build a strong grammatical foundation while developing confidence through real conversation.

Signature Classes are 10-week courses designed to teach grammar step by step using Coucou’s proprietary course and exercise books. Sessions begin at $299 and help students establish the foundation needed to move through the program. Conversation Labs complement these classes by focusing on speaking practice through guided discussions, games, and interactive activities. These 1.5-hour drop-in sessions begin at $40 per class, with five to ten sessions recommended for each level. All classes are available both online and in person throughout New York City.
One of Coucou’s most distinctive features is its flexibility. Students can customize their learning schedule based on their personal goals:
Slow & Steady: Take Conversation Labs between Signature Classes to keep practicing French over time.
Balanced: Pair one weekly Conversation Lab with a Signature Class for consistent grammar instruction and speaking practice.
Accelerated: Combine a Signature Class with multiple Conversation Labs each week for faster progress.
For students who want to focus on speaking, Coucou also offers discounted Conversation Lab packages:
5 Classes: $275 ($55 per class), valid for 10 weeks
10 Classes: $500 ($50 per class), valid for 20 weeks
25 Classes: $1,000 ($40 per class), valid for 50 weeks
Signature Classes cost $299 online or $489 in person, and students who register at least 60 days in advance receive a 15% Early Bird discount.
The curriculum consists of seven levels, beginning with an introductory course for complete beginners and progressing through increasingly advanced stages until students reach the Expert level. New students can complete a placement test to determine where they should begin.
In addition to its flexible curriculum, Coucou emphasizes small class sizes of only 10–12 students, allowing everyone plenty of speaking time while still benefiting from interaction with classmates. All instructors are native French speakers trained in Coucou’s teaching method, and each level includes custom-designed course books and exercises. Students who miss a class can also access class recordings to stay caught up. Beyond language instruction, Coucou describes itself as a community where students can meet fellow francophiles, play games, share snacks, and practice French in a welcoming environment.
Which Organization Is Right for You?
Both organizations provide excellent opportunities to improve your French, but they offer different learning experiences. L’Alliance New York offers a wide range of class formats, flexible pacing, and programs for every age, from toddlers to adults, while also incorporating French culture, certification preparation, and immersion opportunities. Coucou focuses on a modern, flexible learning path that balances grammar instruction with conversation practice, making it especially appealing for students who want to build confidence speaking French in a relaxed, community-oriented setting.
No matter which organization you choose, the start of the fall semester is a great opportunity to begin, or continue, your French learning journey.
