POSITION TITLE: Middle School French Teacher

NYFACS OVERVIEW:
The New York French American Charter School (NYFACS) is a PreK – 8 school located in the heart of Harlem and the Francophone community. Comprised of parents, teachers and families from over 80 different countries and nationalities around the world, the school provides lessons in cultural diversity alongside a strong bi-lingual education in an immersive environment.
POSITION SUMMARY:
NYFACS is seeking a knowledgeable, engaging, and student-centered Middle School French Teacher to provide high-quality French-language instruction to students in Grades 6–8. The teacher will develop students’ proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing while fostering an appreciation for French and Francophone cultures.
The successful candidate will use differentiated, culturally responsive, and standards-aligned instructional practices to meet the needs of students with varying levels of French-language proficiency. In a dual-language setting, the teacher will collaborate closely with English-language teachers, special education teachers, ENL staff, and school leaders to support student achievement and maintain the integrity of the school’s instructional model.
Instruction and Curriculum
• Plan and deliver rigorous, engaging, and developmentally appropriate French-language instruction for students in Grades 6–8.
• Develop students’ proficiency in French speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
• Teach French language, literacy, grammar, vocabulary, composition, and Francophone culture.
• Align instruction with the school’s curriculum, New York State learning standards, and applicable world-language proficiency standards.
• Develop unit plans, lesson plans, instructional materials, projects, and assessments.
• Incorporate authentic French-language texts, media, literature, music, history, and cultural resources into instruction.
• Use a variety of instructional approaches, including direct instruction, collaborative learning, project-based learning, and student discussion.
• Maintain consistent use of French as the primary language of instruction, as appropriate to students’ proficiency levels and the school’s instructional model.
• Integrate technology and digital resources to strengthen language development and student engagement.
• Prepare students for applicable French-language proficiency assessments, including DELF examinations when required by the school.
Assessment and Student Support
• Assess students regularly through formal and informal measures.
• Analyze assessment data to identify student strengths, learning gaps, and necessary instructional adjustments.
• Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback to students.
• Differentiate instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced French-language learners.
• Provide interventions, enrichment, tutoring, and academic support as needed.
• Develop and implement appropriate supports for multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students with Individualized Education Programs.
• Participate in student support meetings, promotion discussions, and intervention planning.
• Maintain accurate records of student grades, assessments, attendance, progress, and interventions.
Classroom Culture and Management
• Establish a safe, structured, inclusive, and academically focused classroom environment.
• Communicate clear expectations for student behavior, participation, effort, and academic performance.
• Implement the school’s classroom management, discipline, and restorative practices consistently.
• Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Promote student confidence, independence, collaboration, and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity.
• Ensure that classroom displays, materials, and activities reflect French and Francophone cultures.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
• Collaborate with grade-level teachers, content-area teachers, special education staff, ENL teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders.
• Participate in common planning, data meetings, professional development, faculty meetings, parent conferences, and schoolwide events.
• Support interdisciplinary planning and coordinate instruction across French and English classrooms when applicable.
• Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, academic concerns, behavior, attendance, and available supports.
• Provide family communications in an accessible and culturally responsive manner.
• Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the school’s French and dual-language programs.
• Participate in student recruitment, family engagement, cultural celebrations, field trips, exhibitions, and other school activities.
• Perform supervisory duties, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, hallway, advisory, or other assignments as required.
• Maintain professional conduct and comply with all school policies, applicable laws, and authorizer requirements.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Native or near-native French proficiency.
• Strong oral and written proficiency in French and English.
• Demonstrated knowledge of French-language acquisition, literacy development, and culturally responsive teaching.
• Ability to teach students with varying levels of French-language proficiency.
• Strong classroom management, organization, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to serving a diverse student population and supporting equitable student outcomes.
• Ability to use student data to plan instruction and provide differentiated support.
• Experience preparing students for the DELF examination.
