POSITION TITLE: Elementary School French Teacher

The New York French American Charter School is a PreK – 8 school located in the heart of Harlem and the Francophone community. Comprised of parents, teachers and families from over 80 different countries and nationalities around the world, the school provides lessons in cultural diversity alongside a strong bi-lingual education in an immersive environment.
POSITION SUMMARY:
NYFACS is seeking an enthusiastic, nurturing, and skilled Elementary French Teacher to provide high-quality French-language instruction to students in the elementary grades. The teacher will build students’ foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing while developing confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for French and Francophone cultures.
In a dual-language or French-language program, the teacher will collaborate with grade-level teachers, special education staff, ENL teachers, instructional leaders, and families to support academic growth and maintain the integrity of the school’s language model. The successful candidate will use developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and differentiated instructional practices to meet the needs of young learners with varying levels of French proficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum
• Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned French-language instruction for elementary students.
• Develop foundational proficiency in French speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
• Teach phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, grammar, and written expression in French, as appropriate to the grade level.
• Use songs, movement, storytelling, games, visuals, manipulatives, read-alouds, and hands-on activities to support language development.
• Develop unit plans, lesson plans, instructional materials, projects, and assessments aligned with the school’s curriculum and instructional goals.
• Incorporate authentic French-language texts, children’s literature, music, traditions, geography, and Francophone cultures into instruction.
• Maintain consistent use of French as the primary language of instruction, as appropriate to students’ developmental and proficiency levels.
• Differentiate instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced French-language learners.
• Integrate technology and digital resources to strengthen language acquisition and student engagement.
• Support interdisciplinary learning by connecting French instruction to literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts when appropriate.
Assessment and Student Support
• Use formal and informal assessments to monitor student learning and language development.
• Analyze student work and assessment data to identify strengths, learning gaps, and needed instructional adjustments.
• Provide timely, specific, and age-appropriate feedback to students.
• Provide intervention, small-group instruction, enrichment, and additional practice based on student needs.
• Implement accommodations, modifications, and supports for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students with Individualized Education Programs.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, assessment results, progress, and interventions.
• Participate in student support meetings, grade-level data meetings, promotion discussions, and family conferences.
• Communicate concerns promptly and collaborate with families and school staff to develop appropriate supports.
Classroom Culture and Management
• Establish a safe, joyful, structured, inclusive, and academically focused classroom environment.
• Create developmentally appropriate routines and clear expectations for behavior, participation, transitions, and learning.
• Use positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and the school’s classroom management systems consistently.
• Build warm, respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Promote student independence, collaboration, confidence, curiosity, and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity.
• Organize the classroom to support active learning, small-group instruction, literacy centers, and student access to French-language materials.
• Ensure classroom displays, books, resources, and activities reflect diverse French-speaking communities.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
• Collaborate with grade-level teachers, special education staff, ENL teachers, interventionists, instructional coaches, and school leaders.
• Participate in common planning, data meetings, faculty meetings, professional development, parent conferences, and schoolwide events.
• Coordinate instruction across French and English classrooms when applicable to the school’s dual-language model.
• Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, attendance, behavior, and available supports.
• Prepare family communications in an accessible and culturally responsive manner.
• Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the school’s French and dual-language programs.
• Participate in cultural celebrations, assemblies, field trips, student exhibitions, recruitment activities, and family engagement events.
• Perform supervisory duties, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, hallway, and other assignments as required.
• Maintain professional conduct and comply with school policies, applicable laws, and authorizer requirements.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Strong oral and written proficiency in French and English.
• Demonstrated knowledge of elementary education, language acquisition, literacy development, and child development.
• Ability to teach students with varying levels of French-language proficiency.
• Strong classroom management, organization, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to serving a diverse student population and supporting equitable student outcomes.
• Ability to use student data to plan instruction and provide differentiated support.
• Appropriate New York State teaching certification or eligibility for certification preferred.
