This summer, L’Alliance New York invites audiences to experience the work of one of documentary cinema’s greatest masters with Frederick Wiseman in France, a special film series running May 8 through July 24, 2026, at the Florence Gould Theater.
For nearly six decades, acclaimed American filmmaker Frederick Wiseman has documented the inner workings of institutions with remarkable patience and insight. Best known for his groundbreaking films exploring American schools, hospitals, courts, libraries, parks, and museums, Wiseman has built an unparalleled record of everyday life through observational documentary filmmaking.
Less well known, but equally fascinating, is his deep connection to France. After living in Paris during the 1950s, Wiseman returned to France later in life, eventually splitting his time between Paris and Cambridge, Massachusetts. His affection for the country inspired a remarkable collection of films that explore some of France’s most iconic cultural institutions. This special series highlights four of those documentaries, offering audiences an intimate look behind the scenes of places that are central to French artistic and cultural life.
