The 33rd African Diaspora International Film Festival Presents: Diya, the Price of Blood by
WHERE: Teachers College, Columbia University
WHEN: Monday, December 1, 6pm

The powerful thriller Diya (The Price of Blood) is the surprising feature debut from Chadian director Achille Ronaimou, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The story begins when Dane (Ferdinand Mbaissané), an NGO driver in N’Djamena, accidentally runs over and kills a schoolboy, plunging him into an existential crisis.
The victim’s family invokes the Diya, or blood debt, demanding an exorbitant sum that Dane cannot afford. Ronaimou crafts a moral labyrinth that contrasts Dane’s personal decency with a ruthless society where ancient custom clashes with modern corruption.
This intimate, high-stakes thriller uses the specificity of Chadian culture to examine universal questions of justice, morality, and survival in contemporary Africa.
