Directed by Maurice Pialat
With Marlène Jobert, Jean Yanne, Christine Fabréga
(1972) 110min, 35mm
This autobiographical film from French master Maurice Pialat () is the harrowing account of a relationship in breakdown, with Jean Yanne (who won the best actor award at Cannes for this role) as a domineering and philandering filmmaker whose behavior threatens to destroy his relationships with both his wife and mistress (Marlène Jobert of Godard’s ). Painfully intimate and marked by Pialat’s trademark blend of naturalism and psychologically penetrating formalistic experimentation, is a wrenching account of emotional masochism.
